Your Comfort Care Solution

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Dental anxiety prevents millions from getting necessary treatment, leading to serious oral health problems. Fear of needles, drills, or past traumatic experiences create overwhelming stress. Sedation dentistry eliminates anxiety, allowing comfortable treatment while you relax completely.
Sedation dentistry uses medications to help patients relax during dental procedures. Options range from mild sedation where you remain awake but calm, to deep sedation where you sleep through treatment. The appropriate sedation level depends on your anxiety level, medical history, and procedure complexity.

For individuals experiencing dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, or requiring extensive procedures, sedation options can be highly beneficial. These medications induce a state of relaxation, making time seem to fly and treatments feel less daunting. At Minot Dental Partners in Minot, ND, we provide a range of sedation levels tailored to your unique needs and comfort. Many who have struggled with dental fears throughout their lives are finally able to receive the treatment they need thanks to sedation dentistry.

Dental implants offer a lasting fix for lost teeth, seamlessly integrated into the bone that once held your natural smile.
  • Local Anesthesia
  • Oral Sedation
  • Nitrous Oxide
  • Conscious Sedation
Individually crafted replacements for absent teeth that close the gaps in your smile, and preventing adjacent teeth from moving.
Achieve a dazzling smile by seamlessly blending with your natural teeth, hiding imperfections like chips, cracks, or stains for ultimate confidence.
Stunning, custom-made restorations that shield and reinforce damaged teeth while preserving a natural look that harmonizes with your smile.

Your Deep Relaxation Solution

What Is IV Sedation?

Severe dental anxiety or lengthy procedures require more than nitrous oxide can provide. Oral sedation takes time to work and offers unpredictable effects. IV sedation delivers precise, adjustable relaxation levels that ensure complete comfort throughout any dental procedure.

IV sedation involves administering sedative medications directly into your bloodstream through an intravenous line. This method provides immediate, controllable sedation levels ranging from conscious relaxation to deep sleep. Minot Dental Partners in Minot, ND monitors vital signs continuously during IV sedation to ensure safety. The medications create amnesia, so you typically remember little or nothing about the procedure afterward.

Your Pain Prevention Solution

What Is Local Anesthesia?

Nobody wants to feel drilling or dental work. Even routine fillings cause discomfort without proper numbing. Local anesthesia completely blocks pain signals from specific teeth and surrounding tissues, ensuring painless treatment.

Local anesthesia is the injection of numbing medication directly into gum tissue near the treatment area. The medication temporarily blocks nerve signals, eliminating all sensation in targeted teeth and surrounding structures. Minot Dental Partners in Minot, ND uses advanced injection techniques that minimize any sensation during administration. Modern anesthetics work quickly, providing complete numbness within minutes that lasts throughout your procedure.

Your Relaxation Pill Solution

What Is Oral Sedation?

Dental anxiety makes appointments stressful, affecting millions who need care. Injectable sedation feels too invasive for moderate anxiety levels. Oral sedation provides calming relief through a simple pill taken before treatment.

Oral sedation uses prescription medications taken by mouth before your dental appointment. These anti-anxiety medications reduce fear and create deep relaxation while you remain conscious and responsive. Minot Dental Partners in Minot, ND prescribes the appropriate medication and dosage based on your anxiety level and procedure type. The sedation makes you drowsy and relaxed, with most patients having little memory of the procedure.

Your Gentle Calming Solution

What is Nitrous Oxide?

Mild dental anxiety or fear of needles prevents many from seeking routine care. Heavy sedation isn’t necessary for simple procedures. Nitrous oxide provides gentle relaxation that works quickly and wears off immediately after treatment.

Nitrous oxide, commonly called laughing gas, is a safe sedative you breathe through a small mask over your nose. The gas creates a pleasant, relaxed feeling within minutes while you remain fully conscious and able to respond. Minot Dental Partners in Minot, ND adjusts the concentration throughout your procedure to maintain optimal comfort levels. Once treatment ends, breathing pure oxygen for a few minutes eliminates all effects completely.

Your Aware Relaxation Solution

What is Conscious Sedation?

Dental procedures trigger anxiety that keeps many people from getting necessary treatment. Full anesthesia isn’t needed for most dental work, yet patients need more than just numbing. Conscious sedation provides the perfect balance, keeping you calm and comfortable while remaining awake and responsive.

Conscious sedation uses medications to help you relax deeply while maintaining the ability to respond to verbal commands and breathe on your own. This sedation level reduces anxiety, minimizes discomfort, and often creates partial amnesia about the procedure. Minot Dental Partners in Minot, ND offers various conscious sedation methods including nitrous oxide, oral medications, or IV sedation to match your specific needs. You’ll feel drowsy and relaxed throughout treatment, with most patients describing the experience as pleasant and stress-free.

Dental Care Without Anxiety

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help you relax during dental procedures, ranging from mild relaxation to complete unconsciousness. It eliminates fear and anxiety, allows completion of multiple procedures in one visit, and makes dental care accessible for patients who avoid treatment. You receive necessary dental work comfortably without the stress that normally keeps you away.

Eliminates Dental Fear

Sedation removes the anxiety that prevents you from seeking dental care. You feel calm and relaxed throughout your appointment, overcoming the phobia that has kept you from maintaining good oral health for years.

No Memory of Treatment

Many sedation levels cause temporary amnesia about the procedure. You won’t remember the sounds, sensations, or experience that typically cause dental anxiety, making future appointments less stressful.

Complete Multiple Procedures

Deep sedation allows your dentist to perform several hours of work in one appointment. You complete extensive treatment plans in one visit instead of enduring multiple stressful appointments spread over weeks or months.

Comfort for Long Procedures

Sedation keeps you relaxed during lengthy treatments like implant placement or full mouth reconstruction. You don’t experience the jaw fatigue, restlessness, or discomfort from sitting still that normally makes extended appointments challenging.

Controls Gag Reflex

Sedation reduces or eliminates the gag reflex that makes dental work difficult or impossible for some patients. You tolerate impressions, X-rays, and work in the back of your mouth comfortably without gagging.

Safe and Monitored

Your vital signs are continuously watched throughout sedation by trained professionals. The process is extremely safe with modern medications and monitoring equipment, giving you and your family confidence in your care.

Comfortable Care for Anxious Patients

Who Is Sedation Dentistry For?

Dental anxiety prevents many people from getting necessary care, while others need extensive treatment completed in fewer visits. Sedation dentistry uses medication to help you relax or sleep through procedures, making dental care accessible and comfortable.

Severe Dental Anxiety or Phobia

Fear keeps you from scheduling appointments or causes panic attacks before dental visits, and sedation allows you to receive care without overwhelming anxiety.

Extensive Treatment Needed

You require multiple procedures that would normally take several appointments, and sedation makes it possible to complete everything in one or two visits.

Sensitive Gag Reflex

Your gag reflex makes dental work difficult or impossible, and sedation relaxes this reflex so treatment can be completed comfortably.

Do Any of These Situations Sound Familiar to You?

If these challenges prevent you from getting dental care, sedation dentistry could make treatment possible and comfortable.

Anxiety Free Treatment Process

How We Provide Comfortable Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry helps anxious patients receive necessary dental care in a relaxed, comfortable state. At Minot Dental Partners, we offer various sedation levels to match your anxiety level and the complexity of your procedure.
1

Pre-Sedation Consultation and Planning

We discuss your medical history, anxiety triggers, and previous experiences with dental treatment or sedation to determine which sedation option is safest and most appropriate. You’ll learn what to expect during sedation, including pre-appointment restrictions like fasting if receiving deeper sedation. We ensure you have arranged transportation home since you won’t be able to drive after sedation.
2

Sedation Administration and Monitoring

We administer your chosen sedation method, whether it’s nitrous oxide through a mask, oral medication you take before the appointment, or IV sedation for deeper relaxation. Throughout your procedure, we continuously monitor your vital signs including heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels to ensure your safety. A trained team member stays with you the entire time, making adjustments as needed to keep you comfortable.
3

Recovery and Post-Sedation Care

As your dental work is completed, we allow the sedation to wear off gradually while continuing to monitor your condition. Depending on the sedation depth, you may need to rest in our recovery area for a period before going home with your companion. We provide specific aftercare instructions and ensure you understand any restrictions on activities, driving, or decision-making for the remainder of the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sedation Dentistry FAQs

Sedation dentistry helps anxious patients receive comfortable dental care. These questions address sedation options available, who benefits from sedation, and how safe sedation makes your dental experience at Minot Dental Partners.

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. It’s sometimes called “sleep dentistry,” though most patients remain conscious except under general anesthesia. Sedation ranges from minimal, where you’re relaxed but fully aware, to deep sedation or general anesthesia, where you’re unconscious. Minot Dental Partners offers various sedation levels including oral anti-anxiety medication and IV sedation administered by a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. Sedation allows anxious patients to receive necessary dental care comfortably, helps manage pain and discomfort, and enables completion of multiple procedures in fewer appointments. Dr. Perkins and Dr. Rustemier are committed to ensuring your comfort, making sedation available for patients who need it to receive optimal dental care.
Many patients benefit from sedation dentistry for various reasons. People with dental anxiety or phobia who avoid dental care due to fear can receive treatment comfortably. Patients with sensitive teeth or low pain tolerance experience procedures more comfortably. Those with a strong gag reflex that interferes with dental work benefit from sedation’s relaxation effects. Patients requiring extensive or lengthy procedures find sedation makes multiple treatments manageable in fewer appointments. People who have difficulty sitting still due to conditions like Parkinson’s disease or ADHD receive safer, more effective treatment. Patients with special needs may require sedation for comprehensive care. If dental anxiety prevents you from getting necessary treatment, or if you want to be more comfortable during procedures, discuss sedation options with Dr. Perkins or Dr. Rustemier at Minot Dental Partners.
Minot Dental Partners offers sedation options meeting various needs and comfort levels. Oral sedation involves taking prescribed anti-anxiety medication before your appointment, helping you feel relaxed while remaining conscious and responsive. This option works well for mild to moderate anxiety. IV sedation, administered by a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, provides deeper sedation where you remain conscious but deeply relaxed, often remembering little of the procedure afterward. This option is ideal for significant anxiety, lengthy procedures, or extensive treatments. All sedation is provided under careful monitoring with advanced safety equipment. Dr. Perkins and Dr. Rustemier will discuss your anxiety level, medical history, and procedure complexity to recommend the most appropriate sedation option for your individual needs and comfort preferences.
Yes, sedation dentistry is very safe when administered by trained professionals with proper monitoring equipment. Minot Dental Partners takes sedation safety seriously. IV sedation is administered and monitored by a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist specifically trained in anesthesia and emergency response. Your vital signs including heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and breathing are monitored continuously throughout treatment. Modern sedation medications are very safe with excellent track records. Before sedation, we thoroughly review your medical history, current medications, and any allergies to identify potential risks. Most patients experience no complications. Rare side effects are typically minor and temporary. Following pre-operative instructions, particularly fasting requirements, is essential for safety. Sedation dentistry allows millions of anxious patients to receive comfortable, stress-free dental care safely.
With oral sedation and IV sedation at Minot Dental Partners, you remain conscious but deeply relaxed. You can respond to questions and instructions, though you’ll likely remember little afterward. This is called conscious sedation. Some patients doze during treatment but can be easily awakened. You’ll breathe on your own and maintain protective reflexes. This differs from general anesthesia, where you’re completely unconscious, don’t respond to stimulation, and require breathing support. General anesthesia is typically reserved for hospital settings or specialized facilities. Conscious sedation provides the relaxation benefits making dental treatment comfortable while maintaining safety advantages of consciousness. Dr. Perkins will explain what to expect with recommended sedation, ensuring you understand your level of awareness during treatment.
Preparation requirements depend on sedation type. For oral sedation, you’ll take medication at home before your appointment following specific timing instructions. For IV sedation, don’t eat or drink anything (except necessary medications with a small sip of water if approved) for at least six hours before your appointment. Fasting prevents nausea and serious complications if vomiting occurs. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to and from your appointment and stay with you for several hours afterward, as you cannot drive or make important decisions while sedation effects persist. Inform Minot Dental Partners of all medications, supplements, and health conditions. Follow all pre-operative instructions carefully. Avoiding these requirements may necessitate postponing your appointment.
After sedation, you’ll feel drowsy and groggy for several hours. Your escort will drive you home, and you should rest for the remainder of the day. Don’t drive, operate machinery, make important decisions, or sign legal documents for 24 hours. Effects vary by individual and sedation depth, but most people feel back to normal the next day. You may not remember much about your dental procedure due to sedation’s amnesic effects. Some patients experience mild nausea, though this is uncommon. Stick to soft foods and stay hydrated. Take any prescribed pain medication as directed. Your mouth may be numb from local anesthesia for several hours; be careful not to bite your cheek or tongue. Most patients feel the sedation was worthwhile for the comfortable, anxiety-free dental experience achieved.
Yes, sedation dentistry can be appropriate for children who have severe dental anxiety, special needs, require extensive treatment, are very young and unable to cooperate, or have strong gag reflexes interfering with care. However, sedation in children requires additional precautions. Pediatric sedation typically uses oral medication or nitrous oxide (laughing gas) rather than IV sedation. Dosing is carefully calculated based on the child’s age and weight. Children are monitored closely throughout treatment. Parents must follow fasting and preparation instructions precisely. Dr. Perkins evaluates each child individually at Minot Dental Partners, determining whether sedation is necessary and appropriate. Sometimes behavioral management techniques work well without sedation. When sedation is needed, it allows anxious children to receive necessary dental care safely and comfortably.
Sedation dentistry costs vary by type and duration. Oral sedation typically costs less than IV sedation. IV sedation costs more because it requires a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist and additional monitoring equipment, but provides deeper relaxation for lengthy or complex procedures. Sedation fees are separate from the dental procedure costs. Most dental insurance plans don’t cover sedation, considering it elective for patient comfort rather than medically necessary. However, sedation for patients with certain medical conditions or special needs may receive coverage. Minot Dental Partners provides specific sedation costs during treatment planning. We work with financing companies to make sedation affordable. Many patients find sedation worthwhile for the comfort, reduced anxiety, and ability to complete necessary dental care they’ve been avoiding.
Sedation is available for most dental procedures at Minot Dental Partners, from routine cleanings to complex surgeries. However, not every procedure requires or justifies sedation. Simple, brief procedures like routine cleanings typically don’t need sedation unless you have severe anxiety or special needs. More involved treatments like multiple fillings, crown preparations, root canals, extractions, implant surgery, or gum procedures are commonly performed under sedation. Dr. Perkins or Dr. Rustemier will discuss whether sedation is appropriate based on procedure complexity, expected duration, your anxiety level, and medical history. Some medical conditions may contraindicate certain sedation types. The goal is matching the sedation level to your needs and the procedure requirements, ensuring comfortable, safe dental care.

Dr.Sammy is amazing !! So kind and gentle – you can tell he truly cares and also loves what he does . He is very knowledgable , very good at explaining things . Very thorough .. weighs out pros and cons to help you make an informed decision . Does not push for unnecessary procedures . Looks at the whole picture first before jumping to decisions .. I wanted to switch to Minot dental partners from my prior dental provider because I’ve heard such great things about MDP and when I called to inquire about establishing care they were able to schedule me in the same week!! No months and months of waiting like other places. Dr. Sammy was so nice and so understanding about all of my concerns— great listener , very validating ! The staff are all so nice and you can tell they genuinely enjoy working there and working with eachother .. everyone makes sure your comfortable and feel welcome I also really really appreciate the fact they submit to your insurance first to determine what you may owe and then send you a bill at a later time as applicable rather than making you pay all upfront using an “estimated total” and submitting after you’ve paid Minot dental partners are amazing , I would 10/10 highly recommend .

Awesome experience all the way through. Friendly staff, nice facility, and an inviting atmosphere, would definitely take the edge off of visiting the dentist. I say would because all I had done was a 3d x-ray which is not very nerve wracking like some trips can be be. But I will certainly recommend and request to come here whenever I can. Thanks again

First of all, the new hygienist, Lindsey is amazing. I’ve never had a better experience. The front office staff is professional and knowledgeable, and the dentist actually listened to my concerns and what I wanted to say. I will be sending all my friends and family here for sure!

Minot Dental Partners is the best! Both of the providers are very knowledgeable and truly care for all patients! I would absolutely recommend this office to anyone in need of dental services! They even offer sedation options for those who have dental anxiety. They definitely have any other office beat in town with the service they offer and the care they provide!!

Sarah and Dr Perkins both took the time to explain things to me and make me comfortable. They are offering me several treatment options and giving me the time to make my decision, so I can move forward with confidence Jan 10, ‘24. I got my new teeth today! I couldn’t be happier. The whole process was a great experience. Dr Perkins and his staff were great, I felt they were as happy for me as I was. They worked together as a team to get me here -smiling with confidence. Thanks MDP😁

All very kind and professional. Dr also took time to help mitigate some of my anxiety and concerns by explaining and clarifying some questions and concerns. I always appreciate that, makes it easier to follow thru with future appointments.

I called morning with a massive cyst underlying two of my lower teeth. Originally I was provided a Tuesday appointment, but when I said that I was in severe pain and hadnt slept for a couple days, and asked if I could at least get a script for painkillers and or antibiotics, Sylvia asked me to hold on for a minute. A couple of minutes later she returned to say that one of the partners would come in to the practice to see me at 12:00. And the frank, no nonsense approach, some great surgery and clear options and post-op instructions just kept getting better and better! And you could tell that this was not a once-off event, the crew knew what they were expected to do, what their values are … This is not only good dentistry, but great patient-focus generated by even better leadership. Thank you. You have probably added at least five years to my life.

Sarah, my dental hygienist did such a great job! Through the years, I’ve had many hygienists worked on my teeth and Sarah was my lasted one and she did magic! My teeth felt so clean without unnecessary pain. She worked on my ugly stains and managed to lift all of them off. I was super impressed and couldn’t be any happier. Sometimes I’d felt that the hygienist did not much and not worth the time and money. But not with Sarah. I’ll go back to her for sure.

We met Dr Perkins a few years ago when my husband chose implants over multiple root canals. Great general dentistry and superior cosmetic dentistry! Regardless of your dental health needs this is a fantastic dental clinic!

Dr. Perkins was very welcoming and professional. As someone with very bad anxiety, this was an unexpectedly pleasant experience and I will be recommending Dr. Perkins to everyone I know. It is very apparent that he cares about his patients and even gives his cell phone number to contact at any time with concerns. Thank you, Minot Dental Partners and especially Dr. Perkins, for such a pleasant experience!
