Your Nerve Treatment Solution

What Are Endodontic Treatments?

Tooth pain from deep decay or trauma indicates nerve damage requiring specialized care. Without treatment, infected teeth cause abscesses, bone loss, and systemic health problems. Endodontic treatments save natural teeth by removing diseased nerve tissue and eliminating infection.
Endodontic treatments focus on diagnosing and treating problems inside the tooth’s pulp chamber and root canals. These procedures remove infected or inflamed nerve tissue, disinfect the internal tooth structure, and seal the space to prevent reinfection. Advanced techniques and equipment ensure thorough cleaning of complex root canal systems.

Patients experiencing tooth pain, prolonged sensitivity, or dental abscess need endodontic evaluation immediately. Treatment saves teeth that would otherwise require extraction due to irreversible nerve damage. Minot Dental Partners in Minot, ND uses advanced technology including microscopes and 3D imaging for precise treatment. Successfully treated teeth function normally for decades with proper restoration and maintenance.

Save Your Natural Teeth

Benefits of Endodontic Treatments

Endodontic treatments save infected or damaged teeth by treating problems inside the tooth’s root canal system. They eliminate severe pain, prevent tooth loss, and allow you to keep your natural tooth instead of requiring extraction. You maintain proper chewing function and avoid the expense of implants or bridges through conservative treatment.

Stop Severe Tooth Pain

Root canal treatment removes infected nerve tissue causing intense, throbbing pain. You get immediate relief from toothaches that prevent sleep and interfere with eating, talking, and concentrating on work or daily activities.

Save Your Natural Tooth

Endodontic treatment preserves teeth that would otherwise require extraction. You keep your original tooth root, maintaining natural chewing sensation and avoiding the bone loss that follows tooth removal.

Prevent Infection Spread

Treatment eliminates bacteria before they spread beyond the tooth into surrounding bone and soft tissue. You avoid abscesses, facial swelling, and serious infections that can affect your overall health when left untreated.

Cost Less Than Replacement

Root canal treatment plus a crown costs significantly less than extracting the tooth and placing an implant. You save money while keeping your natural tooth, which functions better than any artificial replacement.

Maintain Proper Bite Alignment

Keeping all your natural teeth preserves your correct bite and prevents neighboring teeth from shifting. You avoid bite problems, jaw pain, and uneven tooth wear that develop when teeth are missing.

Quick Recovery

Most patients return to normal activities the next day after root canal treatment. Modern techniques and anesthesia make the procedure comfortable, and any post-treatment soreness resolves within a few days with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Saving Infected Teeth

Who Are Endodontic Treatments For?

When infection or damage reaches the inner pulp of your tooth, specialized endodontic treatment becomes necessary to save the tooth and eliminate pain. These procedures remove infected tissue, seal the tooth, and allow you to keep your natural tooth instead of extracting it.

Severe Toothache or Abscess

You have intense, persistent pain, swelling, or an abscess indicating infection deep inside your tooth that requires root canal treatment to resolve.

Diagnosed Pulp Damage

X-rays or testing revealed that your tooth’s inner pulp is infected, inflamed, or dying, and endodontic treatment is needed to save the tooth.

Trauma to Tooth

An injury cracked or damaged your tooth in ways that exposed or harmed the pulp, requiring treatment to prevent infection and preserve the tooth.

Do Any of These Situations Sound Familiar to You?

These symptoms often signal that endodontic treatment is necessary to save your tooth and eliminate pain.

Root Canal Therapy Process

How We Perform Endodontic Procedures

Endodontic treatments save infected or damaged teeth by treating the tissue inside the tooth root. At Minot Dental Partners, we provide root canal therapy and other endodontic procedures to eliminate pain and preserve your natural teeth.
1

Diagnosis and Treatment Planning

We examine your painful tooth and take X-rays to confirm infection or damage in the tooth’s pulp chamber and root canals. This imaging shows us the number of roots, their shape, and the extent of infection or inflammation. We explain what we found and discuss why endodontic treatment is necessary to save your tooth rather than extracting it.
2

Access and Canal Cleaning

After numbing the area thoroughly, we create a small opening in the top of your tooth to access the infected pulp chamber. Using specialized files and irrigation solutions, we carefully remove all infected tissue from inside the tooth and shape the canals to prepare them for filling. This process eliminates the bacteria causing your pain and prevents further infection.
3

Sealing and Restoration

We fill the cleaned canals with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha and seal them to prevent bacteria from re-entering. After placing a temporary or permanent filling in the access opening, we typically recommend a crown to protect the treated tooth from fracture. Once restored, your tooth can function normally and should last for many years without further problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Endodontic Treatment FAQs

Endodontic treatments save infected or damaged teeth from extraction. These questions address root canal therapy and related procedures that preserve your natural teeth and relieve dental pain at Minot Dental Partners.

What is endodontics?

Endodontics is the dental specialty focused on treating the pulp and tissues inside your teeth. The pulp contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue extending from the crown down through root canals to the surrounding bone. When pulp becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, cracks, trauma, or repeated dental procedures, endodontic treatment becomes necessary to save the tooth. The most common endodontic procedure is root canal therapy, which removes diseased pulp, cleans and shapes the canal system, and seals it to prevent reinfection. Dr. Perkins performs endodontic treatments at Minot Dental Partners using advanced technology including operating microscopes and digital imaging for precise, successful outcomes. Endodontics allows you to keep your natural teeth rather than losing them to extraction.
Several signs suggest you may need root canal therapy. Severe toothache pain, particularly when chewing or applying pressure, indicates possible pulp infection. Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures that lingers after the stimulus is removed signals pulp damage. Tooth discoloration, especially darkening, may indicate pulp death. Swelling and tenderness in nearby gums suggest infection. A pimple-like bump on gums near the tooth root indicates an abscess draining. However, some teeth requiring root canals have no symptoms initially, which is why regular dental exams are crucial. Dr. Perkins detects problems through examination and X-rays during checkups at Minot Dental Partners. Never ignore dental pain; prompt treatment prevents complications and often saves teeth from extraction.
Yes, endodontic treatment can often save severely damaged or infected teeth that might otherwise require extraction. Root canal therapy removes infected or damaged pulp, eliminates infection, and preserves the tooth structure. After treatment, the tooth is restored with a filling or crown, allowing it to function normally for many years, often a lifetime. The key factor is whether sufficient tooth structure remains to support a restoration. If a tooth has extensive decay, fractures extending below the gum line, or severely damaged roots, extraction may be necessary. However, modern endodontics saves many teeth previously considered hopeless. Dr. Perkins evaluates each tooth carefully at Minot Dental Partners, honestly assessing whether endodontic treatment will provide lasting success or whether extraction and replacement offer a better long-term solution.
Endodontic treatment saves your natural tooth by removing infected pulp while preserving the tooth structure. After root canal therapy and restoration, the tooth functions normally, maintains jawbone, and prevents adjacent teeth from shifting. Extraction removes the entire tooth, creating a gap that requires replacement with an implant, bridge, or partial denture to prevent problems. While extraction may seem simpler initially, replacing teeth is typically more expensive and time-consuming than root canal treatment. Saving your natural tooth through endodontics is usually the most conservative, cost-effective option long-term. Dr. Perkins recommends root canal therapy when teeth can be saved successfully, and Dr. Rustemier is available for implant placement if extraction becomes necessary at Minot Dental Partners.
Endodontic treatment has very high success rates, typically 85 to 95 percent, meaning most teeth treated with root canal therapy last many years or a lifetime. Success depends on several factors including the extent of infection, tooth anatomy complexity, quality of restoration placed after treatment, and your oral hygiene. Teeth treated before extensive infection develops have better outcomes. Following post-treatment instructions and getting the recommended crown or filling protects treated teeth. Regular dental checkups at Minot Dental Partners allow Dr. Perkins to monitor treated teeth. Occasionally, teeth don’t heal as expected or develop new problems years later, requiring retreatment or extraction. However, most patients enjoy lasting success from endodontic treatment, keeping their natural teeth functional and pain-free indefinitely.
Minot Dental Partners uses advanced technology ensuring precise, successful endodontic treatment. Operating microscopes provide high magnification and illumination, allowing Dr. Perkins to see intricate details inside tiny root canals that would be impossible with the naked eye. This improves cleaning effectiveness and helps locate additional canals or cracks. Digital radiography produces detailed X-ray images with 90 percent less radiation than traditional film. Cone Beam CT technology creates three-dimensional images showing tooth anatomy, helping plan complex treatments. Rotary instruments clean canals more efficiently than manual files. Advanced apex locators precisely measure canal length. These technologies improve treatment predictability, comfort, and success rates, providing you with the most advanced endodontic care available.
Antibiotics aren’t routinely necessary for uncomplicated root canal treatment because the procedure itself removes infected tissue and bacteria. However, Dr. Perkins may prescribe antibiotics if you have significant swelling, fever, or systemic symptoms indicating spreading infection. Patients with certain heart conditions or compromised immune systems may need preventive antibiotics. If infection is severe or you have medical conditions affecting healing, antibiotics support your immune system during treatment. Most healthy patients with localized tooth infections don’t require antibiotics; root canal therapy effectively eliminates infection by removing the source. Dr. Perkins evaluates your specific situation and prescribes antibiotics only when medically indicated. Following post-treatment instructions and maintaining good oral hygiene promote healing without complications.
After root canal therapy, avoid chewing on the treated tooth until your permanent restoration is placed. The tooth is more brittle without its pulp and protected by only a temporary filling initially. Brush and floss normally, being gentle around the treated area. Take any prescribed pain medication as directed; mild discomfort for a few days is normal. Avoid hard, chewy, or sticky foods that could damage the temporary filling. Schedule your follow-up appointment with Dr. Perkins promptly to have the permanent filling or crown placed, typically within a few weeks. Once permanently restored, treat the tooth like your other teeth with excellent oral hygiene and regular checkups. With proper care, endodontically treated teeth last many years, often a lifetime.
Most dental insurance plans cover endodontic treatment at least partially, typically 50 to 80 percent, because root canal therapy is considered necessary treatment to save diseased teeth. Coverage varies by plan and tooth location; anterior teeth may have different coverage than posterior teeth. The crown or filling placed after root canal therapy usually has separate coverage, often at a different percentage. Some plans have annual maximum benefits that may be reached if you need extensive treatment. Minot Dental Partners will verify your specific coverage before treatment and provide accurate cost estimates. We work with multiple financing companies including CareCredit, Lending Club, and Sunbit to make necessary endodontic care affordable through manageable monthly payments.
Delaying root canal therapy when you need it allows infection to spread, potentially causing serious complications. Pain typically worsens, though sometimes pain subsides temporarily if pulp dies completely, misleading you into thinking the problem resolved. Infection continues spreading into surrounding bone, creating abscesses that can swell painfully and affect your general health. Bacteria can enter your bloodstream, potentially causing serious infections elsewhere in your body. The tooth may fracture from structural weakness, making it unsavable. Eventually, extraction becomes necessary, costing more overall than timely root canal treatment. Never postpone endodontic care hoping the problem will disappear. Prompt treatment by Dr. Perkins at Minot Dental Partners saves teeth, prevents complications, and relieves pain effectively.

Dr.Sammy is amazing !! So kind and gentle – you can tell he truly cares and also loves what he does . He is very knowledgable , very good at explaining things . Very thorough .. weighs out pros and cons to help you make an informed decision . Does not push for unnecessary procedures . Looks at the whole picture first before jumping to decisions .. I wanted to switch to Minot dental partners from my prior dental provider because I’ve heard such great things about MDP and when I called to inquire about establishing care they were able to schedule me in the same week!! No months and months of waiting like other places. Dr. Sammy was so nice and so understanding about all of my concerns— great listener , very validating ! The staff are all so nice and you can tell they genuinely enjoy working there and working with eachother .. everyone makes sure your comfortable and feel welcome I also really really appreciate the fact they submit to your insurance first to determine what you may owe and then send you a bill at a later time as applicable rather than making you pay all upfront using an “estimated total” and submitting after you’ve paid Minot dental partners are amazing , I would 10/10 highly recommend .

I called morning with a massive cyst underlying two of my lower teeth. Originally I was provided a Tuesday appointment, but when I said that I was in severe pain and hadnt slept for a couple days, and asked if I could at least get a script for painkillers and or antibiotics, Sylvia asked me to hold on for a minute. A couple of minutes later she returned to say that one of the partners would come in to the practice to see me at 12:00. And the frank, no nonsense approach, some great surgery and clear options and post-op instructions just kept getting better and better! And you could tell that this was not a once-off event, the crew knew what they were expected to do, what their values are … This is not only good dentistry, but great patient-focus generated by even better leadership. Thank you. You have probably added at least five years to my life.

Sarah, my dental hygienist did such a great job! Through the years, I’ve had many hygienists worked on my teeth and Sarah was my lasted one and she did magic! My teeth felt so clean without unnecessary pain. She worked on my ugly stains and managed to lift all of them off. I was super impressed and couldn’t be any happier. Sometimes I’d felt that the hygienist did not much and not worth the time and money. But not with Sarah. I’ll go back to her for sure.

We met Dr Perkins a few years ago when my husband chose implants over multiple root canals. Great general dentistry and superior cosmetic dentistry! Regardless of your dental health needs this is a fantastic dental clinic!

Dr. Perkins was very welcoming and professional. As someone with very bad anxiety, this was an unexpectedly pleasant experience and I will be recommending Dr. Perkins to everyone I know. It is very apparent that he cares about his patients and even gives his cell phone number to contact at any time with concerns. Thank you, Minot Dental Partners and especially Dr. Perkins, for such a pleasant experience!
