Your Daily Defense System

What Is Oral Hygiene?

Bacteria in your mouth produce acids that attack teeth and irritate gums constantly. Without proper daily care, these bacteria cause cavities, gum disease, and tooth loss. Professional oral hygiene education teaches you the techniques that protect your smile between dental visits.
Oral hygiene encompasses all practices that maintain cleanliness and health of your teeth and gums. This includes proper brushing techniques, effective flossing methods, and understanding which products work best for your specific needs. Professional guidance ensures you’re removing plaque effectively rather than just going through the motions of brushing and flossing.
Patients of all ages need personalized oral hygiene instruction based on their unique challenges and risk factors.

Your dental team evaluates your current techniques, identifies areas you’re missing, and demonstrates proper methods for thorough plaque removal. Minot Dental Partners in Minot, ND provides customized hygiene plans addressing your specific concerns, whether that’s sensitivity, bleeding gums, or cavity prevention. Good oral hygiene at home makes professional cleanings easier and helps dental work last longer.

Home Care Education Process

How We Teach Proper Oral Hygiene

Effective oral hygiene at home prevents most dental problems and keeps your smile healthy between visits. We provide personalized instruction at Minot Dental Partners to help you develop habits that protect your teeth and gums for life.
1

Assessment of Current Habits

We discuss your current brushing and flossing routine to understand what you’re already doing well and where improvements would help. By examining your teeth and gums, we can identify areas that aren’t being cleaned effectively, like spots with consistent plaque buildup. This assessment allows us to tailor our recommendations to your specific needs and challenges.
2

Personalized Technique Demonstration

We show you proper brushing technique using the correct angle and motion for your specific dental situation, whether you have sensitive gums, braces, or implants. You’ll learn effective flossing methods and may discover tools like interdental brushes or water flossers that work better for your teeth spacing. We demonstrate these techniques on models and then watch you practice to ensure you’re comfortable with the movements.
3

Product Recommendations and Follow-Up

We recommend specific toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other oral care products based on your unique needs, such as fluoride strength or sensitivity formulas. You’ll receive guidance on how often to replace your toothbrush and when to use additional products like mouthwash. During your next visit, we check how well your improved routine is working and make any adjustments needed for optimal results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Oral Hygiene FAQs

Proper oral hygiene at home protects your teeth between dental visits. These questions address the best techniques and tools for keeping your mouth healthy every day with guidance from Minot Dental Partners.

How often should I brush my teeth?

Brush your teeth twice daily for two minutes each time. Morning brushing removes bacteria and plaque that accumulated overnight, while brushing before bed cleans away food particles and acids from your day. Some people benefit from brushing after lunch as well, particularly if you’re prone to cavities or have braces. However, if you’ve consumed acidic foods or beverages, wait 30 minutes before brushing to avoid damaging softened enamel. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Replace your toothbrush every three to four months or sooner if bristles become frayed. Consistent brushing prevents cavities, gum disease, and bad breath.
Position your soft-bristled toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gum line. Use gentle circular motions rather than harsh back-and-forth scrubbing, which can damage gums and enamel. Brush all surfaces: outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of each tooth. Don’t forget behind your back molars and along your gum line. Brush your tongue to remove bacteria causing bad breath. Spend at least two minutes brushing to ensure thorough cleaning. Don’t press hard; gentle pressure with proper technique is more effective than aggressive scrubbing. Dr. Perkins can demonstrate proper brushing technique during your visit at Minot Dental Partners and provide personalized recommendations.
Yes, flossing is absolutely essential even with excellent brushing. Your toothbrush cannot reach the tight spaces between teeth where about 35% of tooth surfaces exist. Plaque and food particles trapped between teeth cause cavities and gum disease. Flossing removes this debris before it hardens into tartar, which only professional cleaning can remove. Floss once daily, preferably before bedtime. Take your time and use proper technique, curving floss around each tooth and sliding it beneath the gum line. If traditional floss is difficult, try floss picks, water flossers, or interdental brushes. Choose what works for you, but clean between teeth daily for optimal oral health.
Soft-bristled toothbrushes are best for most people. Medium or hard bristles can damage gum tissue and wear away enamel, especially if you brush too aggressively. Choose a brush head size that comfortably fits your mouth and reaches all areas easily. Manual toothbrushes work perfectly well with proper technique. Electric toothbrushes can be easier for some people, particularly those with limited dexterity, arthritis, or braces. Many patients find electric brushes help them brush more effectively and for adequate time. The best toothbrush is one you’ll use consistently twice daily. Dr. Perkins can recommend specific brushes based on your individual needs during visits at Minot Dental Partners.
Mouthwash is a helpful addition to brushing and flossing but cannot replace them. Antimicrobial mouthwashes reduce bacteria and help prevent gum disease. Fluoride rinses strengthen enamel and help prevent cavities, especially beneficial for people prone to decay. Prescription-strength rinses may be recommended for specific conditions like severe gum disease. However, mouthwash cannot remove plaque or food particles stuck between teeth. Use mouthwash after brushing and flossing for maximum benefit. Avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes after using fluoride rinse to allow maximum effectiveness. Dr. Perkins can recommend appropriate mouthwashes for your specific oral health needs.
Most bad breath comes from bacteria on your tongue, between teeth, or in gum pockets. Brush twice daily including your tongue, which harbors odor-causing bacteria. Floss daily to remove food particles and plaque between teeth. Stay hydrated; dry mouth allows bacteria to thrive. Avoid tobacco and limit coffee, alcohol, and strong-smelling foods. Chew sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva production. Regular professional cleanings at Minot Dental Partners remove tartar contributing to bad breath. Persistent bad breath despite good hygiene may indicate gum disease, cavities, or other health problems requiring treatment. Schedule an appointment if bad breath continues despite improved home care.
Limit sugary and acidic foods that promote tooth decay and enamel erosion. Candy, especially sticky varieties that cling to teeth, provides prolonged sugar exposure for bacteria. Soda, sports drinks, and fruit juices are highly acidic and sugary. Starchy foods like chips and crackers break down into sugars and stick between teeth. Hard candies, ice, and popcorn kernels can crack teeth. If you consume these foods, rinse with water afterward and brush when possible. Better choices include cheese, nuts, vegetables, and water. Crunchy fruits and vegetables actually help clean teeth. Drinking water throughout the day washes away food particles and acids.
Yes, overbrushing can damage your teeth and gums. Brushing more than three times daily or using excessive pressure wears away enamel and causes gum recession, exposing sensitive tooth roots. Use gentle pressure; you’re removing soft plaque, not scrubbing grime. If your toothbrush bristles splay outward quickly, you’re brushing too hard. Let the bristles do the work with proper technique rather than relying on force. Gum recession from aggressive brushing doesn’t grow back and may eventually require grafting treatment. If you’ve already experienced recession from overbrushing, Dr. Rustemier can evaluate whether gum grafting would benefit you during a consultation at Minot Dental Partners.
Wait at least 30 minutes after eating before brushing, especially after consuming acidic foods or beverages like citrus fruits, tomatoes, soda, or wine. These acids temporarily soften tooth enamel. Brushing immediately can actually scrub away this softened enamel, causing damage. Rinse your mouth with water after eating to remove food particles and neutralize acids, then wait before brushing. If you must brush immediately after eating, make sure you haven’t consumed anything acidic. This timing advice applies mainly to brushing after meals during the day. Your regular morning and bedtime brushing schedule should continue as normal regardless of when you last ate.
Bleeding gums are not normal and usually indicate gum disease or overly aggressive brushing technique. If you’re brushing too hard, use gentler pressure and a softer toothbrush. When starting a flossing routine, minor bleeding may occur initially but should stop within a week as your gums become healthier. Persistent bleeding indicates inflammation from plaque buildup beneath the gum line. Continue gentle brushing and flossing, which often reduces bleeding over time by removing bacteria causing inflammation. However, if bleeding continues for more than a week or seems excessive, schedule an appointment at Minot Dental Partners. Dr. Perkins will evaluate your gums and recommend appropriate treatment to restore gum health.

Dr.Sammy is amazing !! So kind and gentle – you can tell he truly cares and also loves what he does . He is very knowledgable , very good at explaining things . Very thorough .. weighs out pros and cons to help you make an informed decision . Does not push for unnecessary procedures . Looks at the whole picture first before jumping to decisions .. I wanted to switch to Minot dental partners from my prior dental provider because I’ve heard such great things about MDP and when I called to inquire about establishing care they were able to schedule me in the same week!! No months and months of waiting like other places. Dr. Sammy was so nice and so understanding about all of my concerns— great listener , very validating ! The staff are all so nice and you can tell they genuinely enjoy working there and working with eachother .. everyone makes sure your comfortable and feel welcome I also really really appreciate the fact they submit to your insurance first to determine what you may owe and then send you a bill at a later time as applicable rather than making you pay all upfront using an “estimated total” and submitting after you’ve paid Minot dental partners are amazing , I would 10/10 highly recommend .

Awesome experience all the way through. Friendly staff, nice facility, and an inviting atmosphere, would definitely take the edge off of visiting the dentist. I say would because all I had done was a 3d x-ray which is not very nerve wracking like some trips can be be. But I will certainly recommend and request to come here whenever I can. Thanks again

I called morning with a massive cyst underlying two of my lower teeth. Originally I was provided a Tuesday appointment, but when I said that I was in severe pain and hadnt slept for a couple days, and asked if I could at least get a script for painkillers and or antibiotics, Sylvia asked me to hold on for a minute. A couple of minutes later she returned to say that one of the partners would come in to the practice to see me at 12:00. And the frank, no nonsense approach, some great surgery and clear options and post-op instructions just kept getting better and better! And you could tell that this was not a once-off event, the crew knew what they were expected to do, what their values are … This is not only good dentistry, but great patient-focus generated by even better leadership. Thank you. You have probably added at least five years to my life.

Sarah, my dental hygienist did such a great job! Through the years, I’ve had many hygienists worked on my teeth and Sarah was my lasted one and she did magic! My teeth felt so clean without unnecessary pain. She worked on my ugly stains and managed to lift all of them off. I was super impressed and couldn’t be any happier. Sometimes I’d felt that the hygienist did not much and not worth the time and money. But not with Sarah. I’ll go back to her for sure.

Dr. Perkins was very welcoming and professional. As someone with very bad anxiety, this was an unexpectedly pleasant experience and I will be recommending Dr. Perkins to everyone I know. It is very apparent that he cares about his patients and even gives his cell phone number to contact at any time with concerns. Thank you, Minot Dental Partners and especially Dr. Perkins, for such a pleasant experience!
