Your Ongoing Protection Program

What Is Periodontal Maintenance?

Successfully treated gum disease requires lifelong vigilance to prevent recurrence. Regular cleanings alone cannot manage the deeper pockets and altered tissue architecture. Periodontal maintenance provides focused care that keeps gum disease from returning after treatment.
Periodontal maintenance is a focused cleaning program for patients who have completed active gum disease treatment. These appointments occur every three to four months and include deep cleaning of periodontal pockets, root surfaces, and careful monitoring of gum health. The increased frequency prevents bacterial recolonization that leads to disease recurrence.

Patients who have undergone scaling and root planing or gum surgery require this ongoing maintenance program indefinitely. The appointments involve more extensive cleaning than regular prophylaxis, targeting areas where bacteria tend to accumulate. Minot Dental Partners in Minot, ND customizes maintenance intervals based on your disease severity and healing response. Consistent periodontal maintenance preserves the improvements achieved through treatment and prevents tooth loss.

Keep Gum Disease Controlled

Benefits of Periodontal Maintenance

Periodontal maintenance involves regular deep cleanings to control gum disease after initial treatment. These appointments monitor gum health, remove bacteria from deep pockets, and prevent disease progression. You maintain stable gums and avoid tooth loss through consistent professional care tailored to your specific needs.

Prevents Disease from Returning

Maintenance cleanings every three to four months keep bacteria levels low in your gum pockets. You avoid the return of swelling, bleeding, and bone loss that happens when gum disease reactivates between standard six-month visits.

Catches Problems Early

Your hygienist measures pocket depths and checks for changes at every appointment. You receive prompt treatment if any areas worsen, stopping small problems before they require surgery or cause tooth mobility.

Protects Your Investment

After spending time and money on gum disease treatment, maintenance preserves those results. You avoid repeating expensive deep cleanings or surgeries by keeping your gums healthy through regular professional care.

Customized Cleaning Schedule

Your appointment frequency matches your disease severity and risk factors. You receive care exactly as often as your gums need it, whether that’s every three, four, or six months based on your response to treatment.

Reduces Antibiotic Need

Regular mechanical cleaning removes bacteria effectively without constant antibiotic use. You avoid antibiotic resistance and side effects while still controlling infection through thorough, consistent professional cleanings.

Maintains Overall Health

Controlling gum disease reduces systemic inflammation affecting your heart and blood sugar. You support your body’s overall health through regular periodontal care that keeps oral bacteria from impacting other organ systems.

Ongoing Gum Disease Management

Who Is Periodontal Maintenance For?

After completing treatment for gum disease, your gums need regular professional care to stay healthy and prevent the infection from returning. Periodontal maintenance cleanings occur more frequently than standard checkups, targeting the specific areas where disease previously developed.

Completed Gum Disease Treatment

You’ve had deep cleaning or other periodontal therapy, and now you need maintenance visits every three to four months to keep your gums stable and healthy.

History of Periodontal Disease

Even with successful treatment, gum disease can return without consistent professional care, making regular maintenance essential for long-term success.

High Risk for Recurrence

Factors like smoking, diabetes, genetics, or previous bone loss put you at higher risk for gum disease coming back, requiring closer monitoring and more frequent cleanings.

Do Any of These Situations Sound Familiar to You?

These situations indicate that regular periodontal maintenance is crucial for protecting your gum health and keeping your treatment successful.

Ongoing Gum Care Process

Your Periodontal Maintenance Cleaning Procedure

Periodontal maintenance cleanings protect your gums after you’ve been treated for gum disease. We provide focused maintenance at Minot Dental Partners to prevent infection from returning and keep your gums healthy long-term.
1

Examination and Pocket Measurement

We begin each maintenance visit by measuring the pocket depths around all your teeth to track any changes since your last appointment. We check for bleeding, inflammation, or areas where your gums may be receding, which can signal returning infection. This careful monitoring allows us to catch problems early and adjust your treatment before disease progresses.
2

Deep Cleaning Above and Below Gum Line

We thoroughly clean above and below your gum line, paying special attention to areas where pockets are deeper or where plaque tends to accumulate. Using focused instruments, we remove bacterial buildup and any calculus that has formed since your last visit, even in hard-to-reach areas. This deep cleaning goes beyond what regular dental cleanings address, specifically targeting the sites most vulnerable to periodontal disease.
3

Treatment Adjustments and Home Care Review

We assess how well your current home care routine is working and provide personalized recommendations for improving your technique or using different tools. If we notice any areas of concern, we may apply localized antimicrobial treatments or adjust the frequency of your maintenance visits. You’ll leave with a clear understanding of what to focus on at home and when to schedule your next appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Periodontal Maintenance FAQs

Periodontal maintenance keeps gum disease under control after treatment. These questions explain why regular maintenance cleanings are essential, how they differ from routine cleanings, and what to expect during your appointments at Minot Dental Partners.

What is periodontal maintenance?

Periodontal maintenance is focused cleaning performed after you’ve completed treatment for gum disease. Unlike routine cleanings for healthy gums, maintenance addresses your history of periodontal disease and prevents its return. These appointments typically occur every three to four months rather than the standard six-month interval. During maintenance visits, we remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line, check pocket depths around teeth, evaluate bone levels, and reinforce home care techniques. Dr. Perkins or Dr. Rustemier monitors your gum health carefully to catch any disease recurrence early. Periodontal maintenance is essential for keeping gum disease controlled long-term after your initial treatment at Minot Dental Partners.
Bacteria causing gum disease regrow and recolonize gum pockets approximately every three months. If you’ve had periodontal disease, you’re at higher risk for recurrence than someone who never had it. Your immune system may not fight these bacteria as effectively, and certain anatomical factors make you more susceptible. More frequent cleanings remove bacterial buildup before it can cause new damage. Research shows periodontal maintenance every three to four months significantly improves long-term outcomes, helping you keep your natural teeth. While six-month intervals work for people with healthy gums, your history of gum disease necessitates closer monitoring and more frequent professional care to maintain the improvements achieved through treatment.
Regular prophylaxis cleanings maintain already-healthy gums, removing light plaque and tartar above the gum line. Periodontal maintenance treats patients with gum disease history, addressing deeper concerns below the gum line where disease occurs. Maintenance appointments take longer and involve more extensive cleaning of periodontal pockets, careful evaluation of pocket depths and bone levels, assessment for disease recurrence, and reinforcement of home care critical for controlling disease. Maintenance is therapeutic, actively managing chronic disease, while prophylaxis is preventive care for healthy patients. The distinction matters for insurance billing and appropriate care. Dr. Perkins or Dr. Rustemier determines which type of cleaning you need based on your periodontal health status.
Periodontal maintenance should be comfortable, though you may experience some sensitivity, particularly around areas where gum pockets are deeper. If you maintain excellent home care between appointments, you’ll likely experience minimal discomfort. However, if plaque has accumulated or inflammation has returned, you might feel tenderness during cleaning. Let the hygienist know if you’re uncomfortable, and we can apply topical numbing gel or use local anesthesia if needed. The more consistently you attend maintenance appointments and practice good oral hygiene, the less buildup accumulates and the more comfortable cleanings become. Most patients find maintenance appointments manageable and worthwhile for preventing disease progression and tooth loss.
Your maintenance appointment at Minot Dental Partners includes several important components. We’ll review any changes in your health or medications affecting gum health. The hygienist or Dr. Perkins carefully measures pocket depths around all teeth, comparing them to previous measurements to detect any disease progression. We remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line using focused instruments. Rough root surfaces may be smoothed to discourage bacterial attachment. We’ll polish your teeth and may apply antimicrobial agents or fluoride. Dr. Perkins or Dr. Rustemier examines your gums, checks for other oral health problems, and discusses your home care routine. The appointment typically takes 60 to 90 minutes depending on your needs.
Once you’ve been diagnosed with periodontal disease involving bone loss, you’ll need periodontal maintenance indefinitely. While active disease can be controlled, the damage cannot be reversed, and you remain at higher risk for recurrence throughout your life. Your periodontal status doesn’t change back to “healthy” even when disease is well-controlled. However, if you had only gingivitis without bone loss, successfully treating it may allow return to six-month prophylaxis cleanings. Dr. Perkins or Dr. Rustemier determines your appropriate cleaning type and frequency based on your specific periodontal health, disease history, and how well you maintain your gums between appointments. Don’t skip maintenance appointments hoping to return to regular cleanings.
Skipping maintenance appointments allows bacterial recolonization of gum pockets, inflammation to return, and disease to progress. You risk losing teeth you worked hard to save through initial treatment. Periodontal disease is chronic, requiring ongoing management like diabetes or high blood pressure. Missing appointments is like stopping medication for chronic illness. Disease doesn’t pause when you skip care; it advances. You’ll likely need more extensive, expensive treatment to regain control. Some damage from neglect may be irreversible. Regular maintenance is far less costly than treating disease recurrence. If scheduling or financial concerns make appointments challenging, discuss them with Minot Dental Partners. We’ll work with you to maintain the care schedule essential for protecting your investment.
Home care between appointments is crucial for periodontal maintenance success. Brush twice daily for two minutes using proper technique, angling bristles toward the gum line. Floss once daily, carefully cleaning below the gum line around each tooth. Consider using interdental brushes for cleaning between teeth. A water flosser effectively irrigates gum pockets. Use antimicrobial mouthwash if Dr. Perkins or Dr. Rustemier recommends it. Don’t smoke or use tobacco, which dramatically worsens gum disease. Manage health conditions like diabetes that affect gum health. Eat nutritious foods supporting immune function. If your home care routine seems overwhelming, discuss it during your maintenance appointment. We’ll help you develop realistic habits you can maintain consistently.
Most dental insurance plans recognize periodontal maintenance as a distinct, necessary service for patients with gum disease history and provide coverage, though often different from regular cleaning coverage. Many plans cover two to four maintenance cleanings annually. Some plans consider maintenance cleanings as part of your annual cleaning benefit, while others provide separate periodontal coverage. Coverage specifics vary widely by plan. Minot Dental Partners will verify your benefits and explain your coverage before your appointment. Even if insurance doesn’t cover maintenance completely, the investment is essential for protecting your teeth and avoiding more extensive, expensive treatment later. Losing teeth from uncontrolled gum disease costs far more than maintenance care.
Periodontal maintenance is a lifelong commitment once you’ve been treated for gum disease with bone loss. The chronic nature of periodontal disease means it never truly goes away; it’s only controlled through consistent care. You’ll need maintenance cleanings every three to four months indefinitely to keep disease from progressing and protect your teeth. This may seem like a significant commitment, but consider the alternative: losing teeth to disease and needing expensive replacements like implants or dentures. Most patients find that once maintenance becomes part of their routine, it’s manageable and worthwhile. Dr. Perkins or Dr. Rustemier at Minot Dental Partners will support you throughout your maintenance care journey, helping you keep your natural teeth healthy for life.

Dr.Sammy is amazing !! So kind and gentle – you can tell he truly cares and also loves what he does . He is very knowledgable , very good at explaining things . Very thorough .. weighs out pros and cons to help you make an informed decision . Does not push for unnecessary procedures . Looks at the whole picture first before jumping to decisions .. I wanted to switch to Minot dental partners from my prior dental provider because I’ve heard such great things about MDP and when I called to inquire about establishing care they were able to schedule me in the same week!! No months and months of waiting like other places. Dr. Sammy was so nice and so understanding about all of my concerns— great listener , very validating ! The staff are all so nice and you can tell they genuinely enjoy working there and working with eachother .. everyone makes sure your comfortable and feel welcome I also really really appreciate the fact they submit to your insurance first to determine what you may owe and then send you a bill at a later time as applicable rather than making you pay all upfront using an “estimated total” and submitting after you’ve paid Minot dental partners are amazing , I would 10/10 highly recommend .

Awesome experience all the way through. Friendly staff, nice facility, and an inviting atmosphere, would definitely take the edge off of visiting the dentist. I say would because all I had done was a 3d x-ray which is not very nerve wracking like some trips can be be. But I will certainly recommend and request to come here whenever I can. Thanks again

I called morning with a massive cyst underlying two of my lower teeth. Originally I was provided a Tuesday appointment, but when I said that I was in severe pain and hadnt slept for a couple days, and asked if I could at least get a script for painkillers and or antibiotics, Sylvia asked me to hold on for a minute. A couple of minutes later she returned to say that one of the partners would come in to the practice to see me at 12:00. And the frank, no nonsense approach, some great surgery and clear options and post-op instructions just kept getting better and better! And you could tell that this was not a once-off event, the crew knew what they were expected to do, what their values are … This is not only good dentistry, but great patient-focus generated by even better leadership. Thank you. You have probably added at least five years to my life.

Sarah, my dental hygienist did such a great job! Through the years, I’ve had many hygienists worked on my teeth and Sarah was my lasted one and she did magic! My teeth felt so clean without unnecessary pain. She worked on my ugly stains and managed to lift all of them off. I was super impressed and couldn’t be any happier. Sometimes I’d felt that the hygienist did not much and not worth the time and money. But not with Sarah. I’ll go back to her for sure.

We met Dr Perkins a few years ago when my husband chose implants over multiple root canals. Great general dentistry and superior cosmetic dentistry! Regardless of your dental health needs this is a fantastic dental clinic!

Dr. Perkins was very welcoming and professional. As someone with very bad anxiety, this was an unexpectedly pleasant experience and I will be recommending Dr. Perkins to everyone I know. It is very apparent that he cares about his patients and even gives his cell phone number to contact at any time with concerns. Thank you, Minot Dental Partners and especially Dr. Perkins, for such a pleasant experience!
