Your Prevention First Approach

What Are Dental Exams and Check-Ups?

Dental implants are titanium posts surgically placed into your jawbone to replace missing tooth roots. Once the implant fuses with your bone, it creates a stable foundation for a crown, bridge, or denture that looks and functions like your natural teeth.
A comprehensive dental exam involves thorough evaluation of your teeth, gums, jaw, and oral tissues for signs of disease or abnormality. Your dentist performs visual inspection, uses diagnostic tools like X-rays, and conducts oral cancer screening during each visit. These systematic assessments identify cavities, gum disease, bite problems, and other conditions before symptoms develop.

Adults and children benefit from dental exams every six months, though some patients need more frequent visits based on their oral health status. The examination process includes reviewing your medical history, checking existing restorations, and evaluating your home care effectiveness. Minot Dental Partners in Minot, ND uses digital imaging and intraoral cameras to show you exactly what’s happening in your mouth. Early detection through regular exams saves teeth, prevents pain, and reduces treatment costs significantly.

Monitor Your Oral Health

Benefits of Dental Exams and Check-Ups

Dental exams and check-ups detect cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer early when treatment is easiest. They track changes in your mouth over time, update your dental records, and ensure minor issues don’t become major problems. You gain peace of mind knowing your teeth and gums are healthy or receiving timely care.

Find Cavities Before They Hurt

Dentists spot decay in its earliest stages during visual exams and X-rays. You can treat small cavities with simple fillings before they reach the nerve, avoiding root canals and preserving more of your natural tooth structure.

Screen for Oral Cancer

Your dentist checks for abnormal tissue, sores, and lesions during every exam. Early detection of oral cancer dramatically improves treatment success, and routine screenings catch warning signs you might miss on your own.

Track Gum Health Over

Time Regular measurements of gum pocket depth reveal whether gum disease is stable, improving, or worsening. You receive appropriate treatment adjustments based on trends, preventing tooth loss from uncontrolled periodontal disease.

Update X-Rays as Needed

Digital X-rays show problems between teeth and below the gum line that visual exams can’t detect. Periodic imaging catches issues like bone loss, hidden decay, and developing wisdom teeth before they cause symptoms.

Review Bite and Jaw Function

Your dentist evaluates how your teeth come together and checks for TMJ problems or teeth grinding damage. Early intervention prevents worn enamel, jaw pain, and bite misalignment that worsen without treatment.

Create a Personalized Care

Plan Based on exam findings, you receive specific recommendations for your situation. Whether you need more frequent cleanings, fluoride treatments, or restorative work, your care plan addresses your unique risk factors and goals.

Preventive Examination Process Steps

What Happens During Your Dental Exam

Regular dental exams detect problems early and keep your oral health on track. We conduct thorough examinations at Minot Dental Partners to identify issues before they become serious or painful.
1

Medical History and Concerns Review

We start by discussing any changes in your overall health, medications, or dental concerns you’ve noticed since your last visit. This conversation helps us understand how your general health affects your oral health and vice versa. We listen carefully to any symptoms you’re experiencing, like sensitivity or bleeding gums, so we can focus our examination on those areas.
2

Comprehensive Oral Examination

We examine every tooth for signs of decay, cracks, or wear, and check all existing fillings and restorations for integrity. Using our advanced technology, we evaluate your gums for signs of periodontal disease by measuring pocket depths and checking for inflammation. We also inspect your tongue, throat, and soft tissues for any abnormalities that could indicate oral health concerns.
3

Digital Imaging and Treatment Planning

We take digital X-rays when needed to see beneath the surface and detect issues not visible during the visual exam, like decay between teeth or bone loss. These images help us catch problems in their earliest stages when treatment is simplest and most conservative. After reviewing all our findings, we explain what we discovered and recommend any necessary treatment, always prioritizing your long-term oral health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental Exam and Check-Up FAQs

Regular dental exams are essential for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. These questions explain what happens during your visit and why consistent checkups prevent serious problems at Minot Dental Partners.

What does a comprehensive dental exam include?

A comprehensive dental exam at Minot Dental Partners includes thorough evaluation of your entire oral health. Dr. Perkins examines each tooth for decay, cracks, or damage, and checks all existing dental work for problems. We assess your gums for signs of disease, measuring pocket depths around teeth. Your bite and jaw joints are evaluated for alignment issues or dysfunction. We perform oral cancer screening of all soft tissues, including your tongue, throat, and cheeks. Necessary X-rays reveal issues not visible during examination. We’ll review your health history and discuss any concerns. This complete assessment establishes your current oral health status and identifies problems requiring treatment.
Most patients benefit from dental exams every six months. Regular checkups allow us to catch problems early when they’re smaller, easier to treat, and less expensive to fix. Some patients need more frequent visits. If you have gum disease, you may require exams and cleanings every three to four months. Patients with high cavity risk, compromised immune systems, or certain medical conditions might need quarterly visits. Children, especially those prone to cavities, sometimes need more frequent monitoring. Dr. Perkins will recommend a personalized exam schedule based on your individual oral health status, risk factors, and dental history during your visits at Minot Dental Partners.
Many serious dental problems develop without causing pain or obvious symptoms in early stages. Cavities often don’t hurt until decay reaches deep into the tooth near the nerve. Gum disease can progress significantly before you notice any discomfort. Oral cancer and other lesions may be painless initially. Bone loss, tooth grinding damage, and bite problems frequently go unnoticed by patients. Regular exams catch these issues early when treatment is simpler and more successful. Waiting until you experience pain often means more extensive and expensive treatment is necessary. Prevention and early detection during routine exams save you time, money, and discomfort.
A regular exam, typically performed at your six-month cleaning appointments, includes checking for cavities, assessing gum health, and evaluating any changes since your last visit. A comprehensive exam is more thorough and is usually done for new patients or annually for established patients. Comprehensive exams include detailed charting of every tooth surface, extensive periodontal evaluation measuring pockets around all teeth, complete oral cancer screening, TMJ assessment, bite analysis, and evaluation of all existing dental work. Full-mouth X-rays or panoramic images are often taken. Both exam types are important, but comprehensive exams provide the complete picture needed for long-term treatment planning.
X-ray frequency depends on your age, oral health, symptoms, and risk factors. New patients typically need a complete set showing all teeth. Bite-wing X-rays that check for cavities between teeth are usually taken every 12 to 24 months. Periapical X-rays showing complete tooth structure help diagnose specific problems. Panoramic X-rays showing your entire jaw may be taken every three to five years. Minot Dental Partners uses digital X-ray technology that produces 90% less radiation than traditional film. We take X-rays only when necessary to diagnose problems or monitor oral health. Children and pregnant women have modified X-ray protocols.
Dental exams are painless procedures. Dr. Perkins uses gentle techniques during examination. You may feel slight pressure when we check your teeth or probe around gums to measure pocket depths, but this shouldn’t hurt. If you have sensitive teeth or tender gums, tell us and we’ll adjust our approach. We’ll explain everything before we do it so you know what to expect. Most patients find exams comfortable and straightforward. If you have dental anxiety, let us know. Minot Dental Partners can provide calming techniques or mild sedation options to help you feel relaxed during your visit. Our goal is making your exam as comfortable as possible.
If Dr. Perkins finds issues during your exam, we’ll discuss them with you in detail. We’ll explain the problem, what caused it, treatment options available, consequences of delaying treatment, and associated costs. You’ll never be surprised by unexpected procedures. Minor issues like small cavities can often be treated during the same visit if you have time. More extensive problems require scheduling separate treatment appointments. We’ll prioritize treatments, addressing urgent issues first and creating a plan for comprehensive care. Minot Dental Partners will work with your schedule and dental benefits to make treatment manageable. You’ll always understand your options before proceeding with any treatment.
Yes, dental exams and professional cleanings are typically performed during the same appointment at Minot Dental Partners. Your cleaning usually happens first, with the dental hygienist removing plaque and tartar buildup, then polishing your teeth. Dr. Perkins then performs your examination, reviewing X-rays and evaluating your oral health. This efficient combination means you accomplish both preventive services in one visit. If significant gum disease is present, you may need more extensive deep cleaning procedures scheduled separately. For patients with complex health histories or extensive treatment needs, we might schedule a separate exam-only appointment first to allow adequate time for thorough evaluation and treatment planning.
Preparation for your dental exam is simple. Brush and floss thoroughly before your appointment. Bring any relevant health information, including updated medication lists and any changes to your medical history. If you’re a new patient, complete paperwork before arriving or arrive early to finish forms. Bring your dental insurance card if you have coverage. Write down any questions or concerns you want to discuss. If you experience dental anxiety, consider asking about sedation options when scheduling. Avoid eating immediately before your appointment so we can examine your teeth thoroughly. Most importantly, don’t skip your appointment. Regular exams are essential for maintaining healthy teeth.
Oral cancer screening is a standard part of every dental exam at Minot Dental Partners. Dr. Perkins visually examines all soft tissues in your mouth, including your tongue, cheeks, floor of mouth, palate, throat, and gums, looking for suspicious lesions, discolorations, lumps, or texture changes. We’ll palpate your neck, jaw, and lymph nodes checking for swelling or abnormalities. Early detection dramatically improves oral cancer survival rates. Most oral abnormalities are benign, but anything suspicious requires biopsy or referral to a specialist. Risk factors include tobacco use, heavy alcohol consumption, HPV infection, and excessive sun exposure. Regular screenings catch problems early when treatment is most successful.

Dr.Sammy is amazing !! So kind and gentle – you can tell he truly cares and also loves what he does . He is very knowledgable , very good at explaining things . Very thorough .. weighs out pros and cons to help you make an informed decision . Does not push for unnecessary procedures . Looks at the whole picture first before jumping to decisions .. I wanted to switch to Minot dental partners from my prior dental provider because I’ve heard such great things about MDP and when I called to inquire about establishing care they were able to schedule me in the same week!! No months and months of waiting like other places. Dr. Sammy was so nice and so understanding about all of my concerns— great listener , very validating ! The staff are all so nice and you can tell they genuinely enjoy working there and working with eachother .. everyone makes sure your comfortable and feel welcome I also really really appreciate the fact they submit to your insurance first to determine what you may owe and then send you a bill at a later time as applicable rather than making you pay all upfront using an “estimated total” and submitting after you’ve paid Minot dental partners are amazing , I would 10/10 highly recommend .

Awesome experience all the way through. Friendly staff, nice facility, and an inviting atmosphere, would definitely take the edge off of visiting the dentist. I say would because all I had done was a 3d x-ray which is not very nerve wracking like some trips can be be. But I will certainly recommend and request to come here whenever I can. Thanks again

I called morning with a massive cyst underlying two of my lower teeth. Originally I was provided a Tuesday appointment, but when I said that I was in severe pain and hadnt slept for a couple days, and asked if I could at least get a script for painkillers and or antibiotics, Sylvia asked me to hold on for a minute. A couple of minutes later she returned to say that one of the partners would come in to the practice to see me at 12:00. And the frank, no nonsense approach, some great surgery and clear options and post-op instructions just kept getting better and better! And you could tell that this was not a once-off event, the crew knew what they were expected to do, what their values are … This is not only good dentistry, but great patient-focus generated by even better leadership. Thank you. You have probably added at least five years to my life.

Sarah, my dental hygienist did such a great job! Through the years, I’ve had many hygienists worked on my teeth and Sarah was my lasted one and she did magic! My teeth felt so clean without unnecessary pain. She worked on my ugly stains and managed to lift all of them off. I was super impressed and couldn’t be any happier. Sometimes I’d felt that the hygienist did not much and not worth the time and money. But not with Sarah. I’ll go back to her for sure.

Dr. Perkins was very welcoming and professional. As someone with very bad anxiety, this was an unexpectedly pleasant experience and I will be recommending Dr. Perkins to everyone I know. It is very apparent that he cares about his patients and even gives his cell phone number to contact at any time with concerns. Thank you, Minot Dental Partners and especially Dr. Perkins, for such a pleasant experience!
