Your Gentle Removal Solution

What Are Tooth Extractions?

Some teeth cannot be saved despite modern dental techniques. Severe decay, advanced gum disease, or fractures below the gumline make restoration impossible. Professional tooth extraction removes problematic teeth safely, eliminating pain and preventing infection spread.
Tooth extraction is the careful removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. The procedure uses advanced instruments to gently loosen the tooth’s ligament attachments before lifting it from the socket. Modern extraction techniques minimize trauma to surrounding bone and gum tissue, promoting faster healing and preserving bone for future restoration options.

Patients with non-restorable teeth, severe infections, or crowding requiring orthodontic treatment may need extractions. The procedure varies from simple extractions of visible teeth to surgical removal of impacted or broken teeth. Minot Dental Partners in Minot, ND prioritizes gentle techniques and appropriate anesthesia to ensure comfortable treatment. Following extraction, various replacement options like implants or bridges restore function and prevent adjacent teeth from shifting.

Remove Problem Teeth

Benefits of Tooth Extractions

Tooth extractions eliminate severe decay, infection, or damage when a tooth cannot be saved. They relieve persistent pain, prevent infections from spreading, and create space for orthodontic treatment or implant placement. You resolve dental problems that threaten your health and comfort while opening the door to effective tooth replacement options.

End Severe Tooth Pain

Extraction removes the source of intense, chronic toothaches that don’t respond to other treatments. You get immediate relief from throbbing pain, pressure, and discomfort that interferes with sleep, work, and daily activities.

Stop Infections from Spreading

Abscessed teeth harbor bacteria that can spread to your jaw, sinuses, and bloodstream. Removing the infected tooth eliminates this health risk, protecting your overall wellbeing and preventing serious medical complications.

Prevent Damage to Neighboring Teeth

Severely decayed or infected teeth can compromise adjacent healthy teeth and surrounding bone. Extraction stops the problem from affecting other teeth, preserving your remaining dental structure and reducing future treatment needs.

Create Space for Orthodontics

Extracting overcrowded teeth allows proper alignment during braces treatment. You achieve a straighter, more functional bite that would be impossible without removing teeth that don’t fit properly in your jaw.

Enable Implant Placement

Removing a damaged tooth allows for implant placement in that location. You can receive a permanent tooth replacement that looks and functions like your natural tooth once the extraction site heals completely.

Quick Recovery Process

Most extractions heal within one to two weeks with manageable discomfort. Following simple aftercare instructions ensures smooth healing, and you can return to normal eating and activities shortly after the procedure with minimal disruption.

Removing Problematic Teeth

Who Are Tooth Extractions For?

Sometimes a tooth is too damaged, infected, or problematic to save, and extraction becomes the best option for your overall oral health. Removing the tooth prevents pain, stops infection from spreading, and allows you to move forward with appropriate replacement options.

Severely Decayed or Broken Teeth

When decay or damage extends too far below the gum line or affects too much of the tooth, extraction may be more practical than attempting to save it.

Advanced Gum Disease

Periodontal disease has destroyed so much bone support that the tooth is loose and painful, and leaving it in place causes continued problems.

Crowding or Impacted Teeth

You don’t have room for all your teeth, or a tooth is stuck beneath the gums and causing pain, infection, or damage to adjacent teeth.

Do Any of These Situations Sound Familiar to You?

These situations often indicate that extraction is the most appropriate treatment to resolve your problem and protect your oral health.

Safe Tooth Removal Process

How We Perform Tooth Extraction Procedures

Tooth extraction removes damaged or problematic teeth that cannot be saved through other treatments. We perform extractions at Minot Dental Partners using careful technique and appropriate sedation to ensure your comfort and promote quick healing.
1

Evaluation and Anesthesia

We examine the tooth with X-rays to understand its root structure and position relative to surrounding teeth and nerves. This imaging helps us plan the safest extraction approach and identify any potential complications before we begin. We numb the area thoroughly with local anesthesia and offer additional sedation options if you feel anxious about the procedure.
2

Tooth Loosening and Removal

We use advanced instruments to gently loosen the tooth in its socket by carefully rocking it back and forth to widen the space around the roots. For teeth with curved or multiple roots, we may need to section the tooth into smaller pieces for easier, more controlled removal. Throughout the process, we work steadily to minimize pressure and ensure you remain comfortable.
3

Socket Care and Healing Instructions

After removing the tooth, we clean the socket and may place bone graft material if you plan to get a dental implant later. We have you bite down on gauze to control bleeding and promote clot formation, which is essential for proper healing. Before you leave, we provide detailed aftercare instructions and prescribe any necessary pain medication to keep you comfortable during recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tooth Extraction FAQs

Tooth extraction removes problematic teeth that cannot be saved. These questions explain when extraction is necessary, what the process involves, and how we help you recover comfortably at Minot Dental Partners.

Why would I need a tooth extraction?

Several situations require tooth extraction. Severe decay that’s destroyed too much tooth structure to repair is the most common reason. Advanced gum disease can loosen teeth beyond saving. Fractured teeth that can’t be restored, especially fractures extending below the gum line, need removal. Crowded teeth may require extraction before orthodontic treatment. Wisdom teeth often need extraction due to impaction or positioning problems. Infected teeth that don’t respond to root canal treatment sometimes must come out. Baby teeth that don’t fall out naturally may need removal. Dr. Perkins or Dr. Rustemier will recommend extraction only when keeping the tooth would cause more problems than removing it.
Extraction begins with numbing the area thoroughly using local anesthesia so you won’t feel pain. For simple extractions of visible teeth, the dentist uses advanced instruments to gently loosen the tooth by rocking it back and forth, then removes it from the socket. Surgical extractions for broken teeth or impacted wisdom teeth require a small incision in your gum and possibly removing some bone or sectioning the tooth. Minot Dental Partners offers IV sedation administered by a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist if you prefer to be completely relaxed and unaware during the procedure. The extraction itself typically takes 20 to 40 minutes depending on complexity. Afterward, you’ll bite on gauze to control bleeding.
You won’t feel pain during extraction because we numb the area completely. You’ll feel pressure and pulling sensations, but no sharp pain. If you feel pain, tell us immediately so we can provide more anesthetic. After extraction, once numbness wears off, you’ll experience some soreness and discomfort that’s typically manageable with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication. The first two to three days involve the most discomfort, which gradually improves. Swelling is normal and peaks around day two. Most patients return to normal activities within several days. Following post-operative instructions carefully minimizes discomfort and promotes smooth healing.
Initial healing takes about one to two weeks, though complete bone filling takes several months. You’ll feel significant improvement within three to four days. Most people return to work the next day after simple extractions, though you might prefer taking a few days off after surgical extractions or wisdom teeth removal. Stick to soft foods for several days, gradually reintroducing regular diet as healing progresses. Avoid strenuous activity for at least 24 hours to prevent bleeding. The socket will gradually fill with new tissue and bone, though you’ll notice the area feels normal much sooner. Dr. Perkins or Dr. Rustemier will schedule a follow-up visit if needed to ensure healing progresses properly.
Bite firmly on gauze for 30 to 45 minutes to help blood clot form. Don’t disturb the clot by rinsing vigorously, drinking through straws, spitting, or touching the area with your tongue. Take prescribed or recommended pain medication before numbness wears off. Apply ice packs to your face for 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off during the first day to minimize swelling. Stick to soft, cool foods initially. Don’t smoke, as this dramatically increases complication risk. Sleep with your head elevated. After 24 hours, gently rinse with warm salt water after meals. Continue brushing teeth away from the extraction site. Follow all specific instructions Minot Dental Partners provides.
Dry socket occurs when the blood clot protecting your extraction site becomes dislodged, exposing bone and nerves. This causes severe throbbing pain usually starting three to four days after extraction. It’s the most common extraction complication. Prevent dry socket by following post-operative instructions carefully: don’t smoke or use tobacco, avoid straws, don’t rinse vigorously or spit forcefully, and don’t drink alcohol for at least 48 hours. Women taking birth control pills have increased risk. If you develop intense pain days after extraction that isn’t responding to medication, contact Minot Dental Partners immediately. Dr. Perkins or Dr. Rustemier can place medicated dressing in the socket to relieve pain and promote healing.
In most cases, yes, especially for back teeth and visible front teeth. When teeth are missing, adjacent teeth shift into the gap and opposing teeth over-erupt, causing bite problems and increasing decay and gum disease risk. Missing back teeth affect chewing function and put extra stress on remaining teeth. Jawbone deteriorates where teeth are missing, potentially complicating future tooth replacement. Dental implants provide the best replacement option, preserving bone and functioning like natural teeth. Bridges and partial dentures are alternatives. Dr. Rustemier’s focused in dental implant placement at Minot Dental Partners. Discuss replacement options before extraction so we can plan appropriately, potentially performing bone grafting during extraction to preserve your bone for future implants.
Dr. Perkins performs routine extractions of erupted teeth at Minot Dental Partners. More complex extractions, such as impacted wisdom teeth, teeth with curved or multiple roots, or teeth requiring bone removal, may be performed by Dr. Rustemier, who has extensive training in oral surgery and implant dentistry. Having both general and advanced expertise available at Minot Dental Partners means you receive appropriate care under one roof without referrals to multiple offices. We’ll evaluate your specific situation and ensure the most qualified doctor performs your extraction. Our coordinated team approach provides seamless care whether you need simple or complex tooth removal.
Extraction costs vary significantly based on complexity. Simple extractions of visible teeth cost less than surgical extractions requiring incisions or bone removal. Wisdom teeth extraction costs depend on whether teeth are erupted or impacted. Additional procedures like bone grafting for socket preservation add to costs. Sedation options if chosen also affect pricing. Most dental insurance plans cover at least a portion of extraction costs, particularly when extraction is medically necessary due to infection or severe decay. Minot Dental Partners will provide specific cost estimates based on your individual case and verify your insurance coverage before treatment. We work with multiple financing companies to make necessary care accessible and affordable.
Dental anxiety about extractions is common and completely understandable. Minot Dental Partners offers several options to help you feel comfortable. IV sedation administered by a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist allows you to remain deeply relaxed and largely unaware during the procedure, with most patients remembering little afterward. This is particularly helpful for wisdom teeth removal or multiple extractions. We can also discuss oral anti-anxiety medication taken before your appointment. Our team is experienced in working with anxious patients and will explain everything before we do it, go at your pace, and ensure you feel safe throughout treatment. Don’t let fear prevent necessary care; we’re committed to making your experience as comfortable as possible.

Dr.Sammy is amazing !! So kind and gentle – you can tell he truly cares and also loves what he does . He is very knowledgable , very good at explaining things . Very thorough .. weighs out pros and cons to help you make an informed decision . Does not push for unnecessary procedures . Looks at the whole picture first before jumping to decisions .. I wanted to switch to Minot dental partners from my prior dental provider because I’ve heard such great things about MDP and when I called to inquire about establishing care they were able to schedule me in the same week!! No months and months of waiting like other places. Dr. Sammy was so nice and so understanding about all of my concerns— great listener , very validating ! The staff are all so nice and you can tell they genuinely enjoy working there and working with eachother .. everyone makes sure your comfortable and feel welcome I also really really appreciate the fact they submit to your insurance first to determine what you may owe and then send you a bill at a later time as applicable rather than making you pay all upfront using an “estimated total” and submitting after you’ve paid Minot dental partners are amazing , I would 10/10 highly recommend .

Awesome experience all the way through. Friendly staff, nice facility, and an inviting atmosphere, would definitely take the edge off of visiting the dentist. I say would because all I had done was a 3d x-ray which is not very nerve wracking like some trips can be be. But I will certainly recommend and request to come here whenever I can. Thanks again

I called morning with a massive cyst underlying two of my lower teeth. Originally I was provided a Tuesday appointment, but when I said that I was in severe pain and hadnt slept for a couple days, and asked if I could at least get a script for painkillers and or antibiotics, Sylvia asked me to hold on for a minute. A couple of minutes later she returned to say that one of the partners would come in to the practice to see me at 12:00. And the frank, no nonsense approach, some great surgery and clear options and post-op instructions just kept getting better and better! And you could tell that this was not a once-off event, the crew knew what they were expected to do, what their values are … This is not only good dentistry, but great patient-focus generated by even better leadership. Thank you. You have probably added at least five years to my life.

Sarah, my dental hygienist did such a great job! Through the years, I’ve had many hygienists worked on my teeth and Sarah was my lasted one and she did magic! My teeth felt so clean without unnecessary pain. She worked on my ugly stains and managed to lift all of them off. I was super impressed and couldn’t be any happier. Sometimes I’d felt that the hygienist did not much and not worth the time and money. But not with Sarah. I’ll go back to her for sure.

We met Dr Perkins a few years ago when my husband chose implants over multiple root canals. Great general dentistry and superior cosmetic dentistry! Regardless of your dental health needs this is a fantastic dental clinic!

Dr. Perkins was very welcoming and professional. As someone with very bad anxiety, this was an unexpectedly pleasant experience and I will be recommending Dr. Perkins to everyone I know. It is very apparent that he cares about his patients and even gives his cell phone number to contact at any time with concerns. Thank you, Minot Dental Partners and especially Dr. Perkins, for such a pleasant experience!
