Your Cavity Repair Solution

What Are Dental Fillings?

Tooth decay creates holes (cavities) that grow larger without treatment, eventually causing pain and infection. Modern filling materials stop decay progression while restoring tooth strength and function. Today’s tooth-colored fillings repair cavities invisibly, preserving your natural smile appearance.
A dental filling is a restorative treatment that repairs teeth damaged by decay or minor fractures. The procedure involves removing diseased tooth structure, cleaning the cavity, and filling the space with durable restorative material. Modern composite fillings bond directly to tooth structure, reinforcing weakened areas while matching your natural tooth color perfectly.
Patients with cavities or small tooth fractures benefit from prompt filling placement before further damage occurs.

The treatment preserves maximum natural tooth structure while preventing bacteria from entering the tooth’s inner chambers. Minot Dental Partners in Minot, ND uses mercury-free, tooth-colored materials that blend seamlessly with surrounding teeth. Early cavity treatment with fillings costs far less than root canals or crowns needed when decay spreads deeper.

Repair Cavities Quickly

Benefits of Dental Fillings

Dental fillings restore teeth damaged by decay, stopping cavities from growing deeper and preventing tooth loss. They eliminate sensitivity, restore normal chewing function, and look natural in your mouth. You protect your tooth structure and avoid more complex treatments like root canals or crowns through timely filling placement.

Stop Decay from Spreading

Fillings remove bacteria and seal the tooth, preventing cavities from reaching the nerve. You avoid severe toothaches, infections, and potential tooth loss by treating decay when it’s still small and manageable.

Eliminate Tooth Sensitivity

Cavities expose inner tooth layers that react painfully to hot, cold, and sweet foods. Filling the cavity ends this sensitivity immediately, letting you enjoy ice cream, hot coffee, and candy without sharp, sudden discomfort.

Preserve Natural Tooth Structure

Early treatment requires removing only the decayed portion, saving healthy tooth material. You maintain more of your original tooth compared to waiting until damage is severe and requires larger restorations or extraction.

Restore Full Chewing Function

Cavities create rough spots and holes that trap food and make chewing uncomfortable. Fillings smooth the tooth surface and rebuild the proper shape, allowing you to bite and chew normally on that tooth again.

Natural Appearance

Tooth-colored composite fillings match your enamel perfectly. Friends and family won’t notice the restoration, and you smile confidently knowing your filling blends seamlessly with your surrounding teeth.

Quick and Comfortable Procedure

Most fillings take 30 minutes or less with local anesthesia keeping you comfortable. You return to normal activities immediately after your appointment with your tooth fully functional and pain-free.

Repairing Tooth Decay

Who Are Dental Fillings For?

Cavities don’t heal on their own; they continue growing until they’re treated. Dental fillings remove decay and restore your tooth’s structure, stopping damage before it reaches the nerve and requires more extensive treatment.

Diagnosed with a Cavity

Your dentist found decay during an exam, and you need a filling to clean out the damaged area and prevent the cavity from spreading deeper.

Tooth Sensitivity or Pain

You feel sharp pain when eating or drinking something sweet, hot, or cold, which often signals a cavity that needs attention before it worsens.

Old Fillings Need Replacement

Existing fillings have cracked, worn down, or pulled away from the tooth, creating gaps where new decay can start or allowing bacteria to enter.

Do Any of These Situations Sound Familiar to You?

These symptoms often mean you have a cavity that needs filling to prevent more serious problems down the road.

Cavity Restoration Process Steps

How We Complete Your Dental Filling

Dental fillings restore teeth damaged by decay and prevent further breakdown of tooth structure. We use tooth-colored composite materials at Minot Dental Partners to repair cavities while maintaining the natural appearance of your smile.
1

Decay Removal and Tooth Preparation

We numb the area around your tooth with local anesthesia to ensure you feel no discomfort during the procedure. Using precise instruments, we remove all decayed tooth material and any weakened structure that could compromise the filling. We shape the cavity to create a clean surface that allows the filling material to bond securely.
2

Filling Material Placement

We apply the tooth-colored composite resin in layers, carefully shaping it to restore your tooth’s natural contours and biting surface. Each layer is hardened with a special curing light before we add the next, creating a strong, durable restoration. We select a shade that matches your surrounding teeth so the filling blends invisibly with your natural enamel.
3

Final Shaping and Bite Adjustment

We shape and polish the filling to ensure it feels smooth and comfortable against your tongue and cheek. You’ll bite down on special paper that shows us exactly where your teeth make contact, allowing us to adjust the filling until your bite feels completely natural. Before you leave, we check that the filling doesn’t interfere with your normal chewing motion and make any final refinements needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental Filling FAQs

Dental fillings repair cavities and prevent further decay. These questions address what to expect when you need a filling and how modern materials restore your tooth naturally at Minot Dental Partners.

How do I know if I need a filling?

You may need a filling if you experience tooth sensitivity, pain when biting, visible holes or dark spots on teeth, or rough edges you can feel with your tongue. However, many cavities develop without symptoms, especially in early stages. That’s why regular dental exams are essential. Dr. Perkins detects cavities during routine checkups using examination and X-rays that reveal decay between teeth or beneath the surface. Catching cavities early means smaller, simpler fillings. Waiting until a tooth hurts often means decay has progressed deeper, potentially requiring more extensive treatment like crowns or root canals. Don’t skip your regular dental appointments.
Dr. Perkins begins by numbing the area around your tooth so you won’t feel any pain. Once numb, he removes the decayed portion of your tooth using a drill or other instruments. The cavity is thoroughly cleaned to eliminate all bacteria and debris. Next, he fills the clean cavity with filling material, shaping it to match your tooth’s natural contour. For tooth-colored fillings, a special light hardens the material in layers. Finally, the filling is adjusted so your bite feels comfortable and then polished smooth. The entire process typically takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on the cavity’s size and location. You can usually return to normal activities immediately afterward.
Minot Dental Partners is a mercury-free practice, meaning we use tooth-colored composite resin for most fillings. These materials match your natural tooth color perfectly, making fillings virtually invisible. Composite fillings bond directly to tooth structure, actually strengthening the tooth and requiring less removal of healthy tooth structure than metal fillings. They’re suitable for most cavities and last many years with proper care. For large cavities in back teeth where chewing forces are greatest, sometimes porcelain inlays or onlays provide superior durability. Dr. Perkins will recommend the most appropriate material based on your cavity’s size, location, and your individual needs.
You won’t feel pain during the filling procedure because we thoroughly numb the area with local anesthesia. You may feel pressure or vibration from the drill, but no pain. The anesthesia injection itself causes brief discomfort, though we can apply topical numbing gel first to minimize this. After the filling, your tooth may feel sensitive to temperature or pressure for a few days as it adjusts. This temporary sensitivity is normal and usually resolves quickly. Over-the-counter pain relievers help if needed. If sensitivity persists beyond two weeks or worsens, contact Minot Dental Partners. Dr. Perkins will evaluate whether adjustment is necessary.
Tooth-colored composite fillings typically last 7 to 10 years, sometimes longer with excellent oral hygiene and gentle chewing habits. Longevity depends on several factors: filling size and location, chewing forces on the tooth, your oral hygiene, whether you grind your teeth, and your diet. Large fillings in back teeth endure more stress and may not last as long as small fillings in front teeth. Regular dental checkups allow Dr. Perkins to monitor your fillings and detect wear or damage early. With proper care, many fillings last well beyond average lifespans. Eventually all fillings need replacement due to normal wear, but good maintenance maximizes their longevity.
With tooth-colored composite fillings used at Minot Dental Partners, you can eat as soon as the numbness wears off, usually within two to three hours. Be careful not to accidentally bite your numb lip or cheek while eating before sensation returns. Your tooth may feel slightly sensitive for a few days, so you might want to avoid extremely hot or cold foods temporarily and chew on the opposite side if the filling is large. Otherwise, resume your normal diet. If you got a temporary filling while waiting for a permanent restoration, avoid sticky or hard foods on that tooth and follow any specific instructions Dr. Perkins provides.
Fillings repair small to moderate cavities, replacing only the damaged portion of your tooth while preserving most of the natural structure. Crowns, or caps, cover your entire tooth when damage is extensive. If a cavity is too large for a filling to adequately restore strength, or if your tooth is cracked or weakened from large old fillings, a crown provides better protection. Crowns require more tooth preparation and typically cost more than fillings. Dr. Perkins will evaluate your tooth and recommend a filling if sufficient healthy structure remains to support it, or a crown if your tooth needs more comprehensive restoration for long-term protection.
Cavities form when bacteria in dental plaque produce acids that dissolve tooth enamel. While brushing helps, several factors contribute to cavity risk beyond oral hygiene. Genetics affect your enamel strength and saliva composition. Dry mouth from medications reduces saliva’s protective effects. Frequent snacking or sipping sugary drinks provides constant fuel for bacteria. Acidic foods and beverages erode enamel. Deep grooves in teeth trap plaque that brushing can’t reach. Even with good brushing, skipping flossing allows decay between teeth. Some people are simply more cavity-prone despite excellent care. Dr. Perkins can identify your specific risk factors and recommend targeted prevention strategies.
Fillings can occasionally become loose or fall out, though this is relatively uncommon with modern materials and proper placement. Fillings may fail due to new decay forming around edges, fractures from teeth grinding or biting hard objects, or simply wear over time. If a filling falls out, you’ll notice a hole in your tooth and possibly sensitivity. Contact Minot Dental Partners promptly if this happens. Dr. Perkins will clean the cavity, remove any remaining old filling material, and place a new filling. Leaving the cavity unfilled allows bacteria to enter, potentially causing infection requiring root canal treatment. Don’t delay having lost fillings replaced.
Modern tooth-colored composite resins are strong enough for most fillings, including moderate-sized restorations in back teeth. While metal fillings may withstand slightly higher bite forces, composite fillings actually bond to tooth structure, strengthening the overall tooth in ways metal cannot. Composites require less removal of healthy tooth structure and don’t expand and contract with temperature like metal, reducing crack risk. For very large cavities in molars where maximum strength is crucial, porcelain inlays or crowns may be recommended instead of direct fillings. Dr. Perkins uses high-quality composite materials at Minot Dental Partners that provide excellent durability combined with natural appearance. With proper care, composite fillings serve reliably for many years.

Dr.Sammy is amazing !! So kind and gentle – you can tell he truly cares and also loves what he does . He is very knowledgable , very good at explaining things . Very thorough .. weighs out pros and cons to help you make an informed decision . Does not push for unnecessary procedures . Looks at the whole picture first before jumping to decisions .. I wanted to switch to Minot dental partners from my prior dental provider because I’ve heard such great things about MDP and when I called to inquire about establishing care they were able to schedule me in the same week!! No months and months of waiting like other places. Dr. Sammy was so nice and so understanding about all of my concerns— great listener , very validating ! The staff are all so nice and you can tell they genuinely enjoy working there and working with eachother .. everyone makes sure your comfortable and feel welcome I also really really appreciate the fact they submit to your insurance first to determine what you may owe and then send you a bill at a later time as applicable rather than making you pay all upfront using an “estimated total” and submitting after you’ve paid Minot dental partners are amazing , I would 10/10 highly recommend .

Awesome experience all the way through. Friendly staff, nice facility, and an inviting atmosphere, would definitely take the edge off of visiting the dentist. I say would because all I had done was a 3d x-ray which is not very nerve wracking like some trips can be be. But I will certainly recommend and request to come here whenever I can. Thanks again

I called morning with a massive cyst underlying two of my lower teeth. Originally I was provided a Tuesday appointment, but when I said that I was in severe pain and hadnt slept for a couple days, and asked if I could at least get a script for painkillers and or antibiotics, Sylvia asked me to hold on for a minute. A couple of minutes later she returned to say that one of the partners would come in to the practice to see me at 12:00. And the frank, no nonsense approach, some great surgery and clear options and post-op instructions just kept getting better and better! And you could tell that this was not a once-off event, the crew knew what they were expected to do, what their values are … This is not only good dentistry, but great patient-focus generated by even better leadership. Thank you. You have probably added at least five years to my life.

Sarah, my dental hygienist did such a great job! Through the years, I’ve had many hygienists worked on my teeth and Sarah was my lasted one and she did magic! My teeth felt so clean without unnecessary pain. She worked on my ugly stains and managed to lift all of them off. I was super impressed and couldn’t be any happier. It is very apparent that he cares about his patients and even gives his cell phone number to contact at any time with concerns. Thank you, Minot Dental Partners and especially Dr. Perkins, for such a pleasant experience!
