Your Tooth Breakdown Solution

What Is Root Resorption?

Sometimes your body mistakenly attacks and dissolves your own tooth roots. This silent process causes no pain initially but leads to tooth loss. Root resorption requires focused treatment to stop the destructive process and save affected teeth.
Root resorption is a condition where the body’s cells break down and absorb tooth root structure. This process can occur internally within the tooth or externally from the outer root surface. Without treatment, progressive resorption weakens teeth until they become loose or fracture at the gumline.

Adult patients may develop resorption from trauma, orthodontic treatment, or unknown causes requiring immediate intervention. Early detection through routine X-rays allows treatment before significant damage occurs. Minot Dental Partners in Minot, ND uses advanced techniques to halt resorption and restore affected tooth structure when possible. Treatment varies based on resorption type and severity, from simple monitoring to root canal therapy or surgical intervention.

Stop Tooth Structure Loss

Benefits of Root Resorption Treatment

Root resorption treatment addresses abnormal breakdown of tooth root structure caused by trauma, infection, or orthodontic movement. It stops progressive root loss, preserves teeth threatened by resorption, and prevents tooth loss when caught early. You protect endangered teeth through timely intervention before damage becomes irreversible.

Saves Teeth from Extraction

Early detection and treatment stops resorption before it destroys too much root structure. You keep teeth that would otherwise require removal due to severe root loss undermining their stability in your jaw.

Prevents Progressive Damage

Active resorption continues destroying root tissue until treated. Intervention halts this process, protecting remaining root structure and preventing additional loss that weakens the tooth further over time.

Addresses Root Cause

Treatment identifies and eliminates factors triggering resorption, such as infection, trauma effects, or pressure from impacted teeth. You resolve the underlying problem rather than just managing symptoms as damage continues.

Reduces Future Complications

Untreated resorption leads to tooth mobility, abscess formation, and eventual tooth loss. Early treatment prevents these complications, maintaining stable teeth and avoiding painful infections or emergency extractions later.

Preserves Bone Structure

Teeth lost to resorption result in jawbone deterioration at that site. Saving the tooth through resorption treatment maintains bone volume, preserving your jaw structure and making future dental work simpler if ever needed.

Often Detected Before Symptoms

Routine X-rays frequently catch resorption before you notice any problems. This early detection allows treatment during the window when your tooth can still be saved, giving you the best possible outcome.

Treating Tooth Structure Loss

Who Is Root Resorption Treatment For?

Root resorption occurs when your body begins breaking down and absorbing your tooth’s root structure, threatening the tooth’s stability and survival. Treatment addresses the underlying cause, stops the progression, and saves the tooth when possible.

Diagnosed Root Resorption

X-rays revealed that your tooth root is being absorbed, either from trauma, orthodontic treatment, or other causes, and you need treatment to prevent tooth loss.

Previous Dental Trauma

A past injury to your tooth triggered a resorption process that’s now threatening the tooth’s structure and requires intervention to stop.

Unusual Pain or Symptoms

Your tooth feels different, shows unusual pink discoloration, or causes unexplained pain that testing and imaging traced to root resorption.

Do Any of These Situations Sound Familiar to You?

These signs may indicate root resorption requiring specialized endodontic treatment to save your tooth.

Root Loss Treatment Process

How We Manage Root Resorption

Root resorption occurs when your body breaks down and absorbs tooth root structure, which can threaten tooth stability. We diagnose and treat root resorption at Minot Dental Partners to stop the progression and save affected teeth when possible.
1

Detection and Diagnosis

We often discover root resorption during routine X-rays before you experience any symptoms, as the condition frequently progresses without pain. Using detailed imaging including CBCT scans, we determine whether the resorption is internal (inside the tooth) or external (on the root surface). This diagnosis helps us understand the cause and extent of damage so we can recommend the most appropriate treatment.
2

Treatment to Stop Progression

For internal resorption, we perform root canal treatment to remove the inflamed pulp tissue causing the problem and fill the affected area with special materials. External resorption may require surgical access to the root surface where we remove the resorptive tissue and place a barrier material to prevent further damage. The specific approach depends on how far the resorption has progressed and its location on the root.
3

Monitoring and Long-Term Management

After treatment, we monitor the tooth closely with periodic X-rays to ensure the resorption has stopped and isn’t recurring. In cases where resorption has caused significant root loss, we may recommend additional support like splinting to stabilize the tooth. If resorption is too advanced to save the tooth, we discuss replacement options like dental implants to restore your smile and function.

Frequently Asked Questions

Root Resorption FAQs

Root resorption is a condition where tooth roots gradually dissolve. These questions explain why resorption occurs, how it’s detected, and what treatment options exist to preserve affected teeth at Minot Dental Partners.

What is root resorption?

Root resorption is a process where your body breaks down and absorbs tooth root structure. While this is normal and beneficial in children, allowing baby tooth roots to dissolve so permanent teeth can erupt, it’s problematic in adults with permanent teeth. External resorption occurs on the outside of tooth roots, often near the gum line, working inward. Internal resorption begins inside the tooth, within the root canal system. Both types gradually destroy tooth structure, weakening teeth and potentially causing tooth loss if untreated. Resorption is relatively uncommon but requires prompt treatment when detected. Dr. Perkins diagnoses root resorption at Minot Dental Partners using X-rays and clinical examination during routine checkups, often before symptoms develop.
Root resorption causes aren’t always clear, but several factors contribute to its development. Trauma to teeth, even minor injuries that seem insignificant at the time, can trigger resorption months or years later. Orthodontic treatment applying excessive force to teeth increases resorption risk. Chronic teeth grinding and clenching create pressure and inflammation that may initiate resorption. Tooth bleaching, particularly internal whitening of discolored teeth, occasionally triggers resorption. Inflammatory responses from infection or periodontal disease can cause external resorption. Internal resorption sometimes follows pulp inflammation from decay or trauma. Some cases occur without identifiable causes. Understanding your risk factors helps Dr. Perkins monitor vulnerable teeth carefully during examinations at Minot Dental Partners.
Root resorption often develops without symptoms, especially in early stages, making regular dental X-rays crucial for detection. As resorption progresses, you might notice pink discoloration near the gum line caused by highly vascular resorptive tissue showing through thin enamel. Teeth may become loose as root structure diminishes. Some patients experience pain or sensitivity, though resorption is frequently painless until advanced. External resorption can create cavity-like defects in roots. You might notice swelling or tenderness in gums around affected teeth. However, many cases are discovered accidentally during routine X-rays before any symptoms appear. Early detection by Dr. Perkins during checkups at Minot Dental Partners allows treatment before extensive damage occurs, potentially saving teeth from extraction.
Root resorption is diagnosed primarily through dental X-rays revealing characteristic patterns of root structure loss. Routine bitewing and periapical X-rays taken during regular checkups often reveal resorption before symptoms develop. Advanced imaging like Cone Beam CT provides three-dimensional views showing resorption extent and location precisely. Dr. Perkins examines teeth clinically for pink spots, mobility, or gum inflammation suggesting resorption. He’ll test tooth vitality to determine if pulp is affected. The resorption type, location, and progression rate influence treatment decisions. Early detection is crucial because resorption can progress rapidly once established. Regular dental examinations and X-rays at Minot Dental Partners allow Dr. Perkins to monitor your teeth and catch resorption early when treatment is most successful.
Treatment success depends on resorption type, location, and extent when diagnosed. Early-stage external resorption can sometimes be treated by removing resorptive tissue, placing restorative material in the defect, and monitoring carefully. If external resorption is detected very early, simply observing it may be appropriate, as some cases stabilize without treatment. Internal resorption requires root canal therapy to remove inflamed pulp tissue causing the problem, then filling the resorption cavity. Advanced resorption involving extensive root structure may make teeth unsavable, requiring extraction and replacement with implants, bridges, or partial dentures. Dr. Perkins and Dr. Rustemier evaluate each case at Minot Dental Partners, providing honest assessment of treatment options and expected outcomes for your specific situation.
Root resorption itself is often painless, particularly external resorption. Many patients have no symptoms, with resorption discovered incidentally on routine X-rays. Internal resorption may cause discomfort if it perforates the root or if pulp becomes inflamed. As resorption progresses extensively, weakening the tooth significantly, you might experience pain from fractures or infection. Some patients notice sensitivity, though this isn’t universal. The frequently asymptomatic nature of resorption makes it particularly concerning; teeth can be significantly damaged before you’re aware problems exist. This underscores the importance of regular dental checkups and X-rays at Minot Dental Partners. Don’t assume your teeth are fine simply because you feel no pain. Dr. Perkins’ careful monitoring protects your teeth from silent damage.
Root resorption progression varies considerably. Some cases progress slowly over many years, while others advance rapidly within months. Internal resorption tends to progress faster than external resorption. Active, aggressive resorption requires prompt treatment to save affected teeth. Inactive resorption that has stabilized may simply need monitoring. Factors affecting progression include the underlying cause, your immune response, continued trauma or inflammation, and whether pulp is vital or necrotic. Once diagnosed, Dr. Perkins will monitor resorption carefully at Minot Dental Partners through periodic X-rays, tracking progression rate. This helps determine whether immediate treatment is necessary or if observation is appropriate. Rapid progression necessitates prompt intervention to preserve teeth before damage becomes irreversible.
Root resorption typically affects single teeth, particularly those with trauma history or undergoing orthodontic treatment. However, certain conditions can cause resorption in multiple teeth. Aggressive orthodontic forces may affect several teeth simultaneously. Systemic diseases or hormonal imbalances occasionally cause more widespread resorption. External cervical resorption sometimes affects multiple teeth, though single-tooth involvement is more common. If Dr. Perkins discovers resorption in one tooth at Minot Dental Partners, he’ll carefully examine all other teeth and review your X-rays thoroughly, looking for additional affected teeth. If multiple teeth show resorption, determining the underlying cause becomes especially important for preventing further damage and guiding treatment decisions. Comprehensive evaluation ensures all problems are identified and addressed appropriately.
While not all resorption is preventable, you can reduce risk through several measures. Protect teeth from trauma by wearing mouthguards during sports and avoiding activities risking dental injury. If you undergo orthodontic treatment, ensure your orthodontist uses appropriate forces and monitors teeth carefully for resorption signs. If you grind or clench your teeth, wear a nightguard to reduce pressure and inflammation. Avoid unnecessary tooth bleaching, particularly internal bleaching of discolored teeth. Maintain excellent oral hygiene preventing infections that might trigger resorption. Attend regular dental checkups at Minot Dental Partners so Dr. Perkins can detect resorption early through X-rays and examination. Promptly treat dental infections, decay, and injuries before they cause complications. Early detection and intervention offer the best chance of preserving affected teeth.
Untreated root resorption continues destroying tooth root structure, progressively weakening the tooth. As resorption advances, teeth become increasingly loose and may fracture under normal chewing forces. The resorption defect can extend into the tooth crown, causing structural collapse. Bacteria can colonize resorption cavities, causing infection and abscess formation. Eventually, extensively resorbed teeth typically require extraction. The longer resorption progresses untreated, the less tooth structure remains, making successful treatment increasingly unlikely. Teeth lost to advanced resorption require replacement with dental implants, bridges, or partial dentures to prevent problems from missing teeth. Early treatment by Dr. Perkins at Minot Dental Partners offers the best chance of saving affected teeth. If a tooth becomes unsavable, Dr. Rustemier can discuss replacement options including dental implants.

Dr.Sammy is amazing !! So kind and gentle – you can tell he truly cares and also loves what he does . He is very knowledgable , very good at explaining things . Very thorough .. weighs out pros and cons to help you make an informed decision . Does not push for unnecessary procedures . Looks at the whole picture first before jumping to decisions .. I wanted to switch to Minot dental partners from my prior dental provider because I’ve heard such great things about MDP and when I called to inquire about establishing care they were able to schedule me in the same week!! No months and months of waiting like other places. Dr. Sammy was so nice and so understanding about all of my concerns— great listener , very validating ! The staff are all so nice and you can tell they genuinely enjoy working there and working with eachother .. everyone makes sure your comfortable and feel welcome I also really really appreciate the fact they submit to your insurance first to determine what you may owe and then send you a bill at a later time as applicable rather than making you pay all upfront using an “estimated total” and submitting after you’ve paid Minot dental partners are amazing , I would 10/10 highly recommend .

I called morning with a massive cyst underlying two of my lower teeth. Originally I was provided a Tuesday appointment, but when I said that I was in severe pain and hadnt slept for a couple days, and asked if I could at least get a script for painkillers and or antibiotics, Sylvia asked me to hold on for a minute. A couple of minutes later she returned to say that one of the partners would come in to the practice to see me at 12:00. And the frank, no nonsense approach, some great surgery and clear options and post-op instructions just kept getting better and better! And you could tell that this was not a once-off event, the crew knew what they were expected to do, what their values are … This is not only good dentistry, but great patient-focus generated by even better leadership. Thank you. You have probably added at least five years to my life.

Sarah, my dental hygienist did such a great job! Through the years, I’ve had many hygienists worked on my teeth and Sarah was my lasted one and she did magic! My teeth felt so clean without unnecessary pain. She worked on my ugly stains and managed to lift all of them off. I was super impressed and couldn’t be any happier. Sometimes I’d felt that the hygienist did not much and not worth the time and money. But not with Sarah. I’ll go back to her for sure.

We met Dr Perkins a few years ago when my husband chose implants over multiple root canals. Great general dentistry and superior cosmetic dentistry! Regardless of your dental health needs this is a fantastic dental clinic!

Dr. Perkins was very welcoming and professional. As someone with very bad anxiety, this was an unexpectedly pleasant experience and I will be recommending Dr. Perkins to everyone I know. It is very apparent that he cares about his patients and even gives his cell phone number to contact at any time with concerns. Thank you, Minot Dental Partners and especially Dr. Perkins, for such a pleasant experience!
