Your Tooth Saving Procedure

What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Severe tooth pain keeps you awake at night and makes eating impossible. The infected nerve inside your tooth won’t heal without intervention. Root canal treatment removes the diseased tissue, eliminates pain, and saves your natural tooth from extraction.
Root canal treatment is a procedure that removes infected or damaged pulp tissue from inside the tooth. The process involves accessing the pulp chamber, removing diseased nerve tissue, thoroughly cleaning and shaping the canals, then sealing them. This eliminates infection while preserving the tooth’s structure and root, maintaining your natural smile.

Patients with deep cavities, cracked teeth, or trauma-induced nerve damage require root canal therapy to save affected teeth. The treatment stops infection from spreading to surrounding bone and other teeth. Minot Dental Partners in Minot, ND completes most root canals in one comfortable visit using modern techniques and anesthesia. After treatment, a crown typically protects the tooth, allowing normal function for many years.

Eliminate Tooth Infection

Benefits of Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment removes infected or damaged pulp from inside your tooth, cleans the canal system, and seals it to prevent reinfection. It stops severe pain, saves teeth from extraction, and allows you to keep biting and chewing normally. You preserve your natural tooth while eliminating the infection threatening it.

Instant Pain Relief

Removing the infected nerve tissue ends the intense, throbbing pain immediately. You sleep comfortably that night and return to eating, drinking, and speaking without the constant agony that disrupted every aspect of your life.

Preserves Your Natural Tooth

Treatment saves teeth too damaged or infected for fillings but still structurally sound. You keep your tooth root, which maintains jawbone health and provides better chewing function than any artificial replacement.

Prevents Abscess Formation

Root canal treatment eliminates bacteria before they create pus-filled abscesses in surrounding bone. You avoid facial swelling, fever, and severe infections that can spread to other parts of your body if left untreated.

More Comfortable Than Extraction

Modern root canal treatment causes less discomfort than tooth extraction and heals faster. You experience minimal post-treatment soreness compared to the prolonged healing required after removing a tooth completely.

Restores Full Function

After healing and crown placement, your treated tooth works exactly like your other teeth. You bite and chew on it normally without sensitivity, achieving complete restoration of that tooth’s function.

Predictable Success Rate

Root canal treatment succeeds in over 95 percent of cases when performed properly. You can confidently expect your treated tooth to last decades or your entire lifetime with appropriate care and crown protection.

Who Is Root Canal Treatment For?

Infected Tooth Pulp

Bacteria have reached the inner chamber of your tooth, causing infection, pain, and potential abscess that requires removal of the infected tissue.

Damaged or Dying Nerve

Trauma, deep decay, or cracks have damaged the tooth’s nerve beyond recovery, and removing it prevents future pain and complications.

Want to Save Your Tooth

Instead of extracting the tooth, you prefer to preserve your natural tooth structure through root canal treatment followed by a protective crown.

Pain Relief Root Canal Process

Your Root Canal Treatment Procedure

Root canal treatment removes infected nerve tissue from inside your tooth to eliminate pain and save the tooth. We perform comfortable root canal therapy at Minot Dental Partners using modern techniques that make the procedure no more uncomfortable than getting a filling.
1

Anesthesia and Isolation

We thoroughly numb your tooth and the surrounding area so you feel no pain during treatment, only light pressure at times. After placing a rubber dam around your tooth to keep it dry and isolated, we create a small access opening through the top of the tooth. This isolation protects the rest of your mouth and gives us a clear, clean workspace.
2

Cleaning and Shaping the Canals

We use precise instruments to remove all the infected or inflamed pulp tissue from inside your tooth’s canals, working carefully to clean even the tiny branches. We measure the length of each canal to ensure we clean all the way to the tip without going beyond the root. Throughout this process, we irrigate the canals with antibacterial solutions that disinfect the space and flush out debris.
3

Filling and Sealing

Once the canals are completely clean and dry, we fill them with gutta-percha, a rubber-like material that seals the space and prevents bacteria from re-entering. We seal the access opening with a filling material and take a final X-ray to confirm the canals are completely filled. In most cases, we’ll recommend returning soon for a crown to protect your treated tooth and restore its full strength.

Frequently Asked Questions

Root Canal Treatment FAQs

Root canal therapy saves infected teeth by removing diseased pulp. These questions explain what happens during treatment, address common concerns, and help you understand why this procedure preserves your natural teeth at Minot Dental Partners.

What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment, also called endodontic therapy, removes infected or damaged pulp from inside your tooth. The pulp is soft tissue containing nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue extending through root canals from the crown to the bone. When pulp becomes infected from deep decay, cracks, or trauma, it must be removed to save the tooth. During treatment, Dr. Perkins accesses the pulp chamber, removes diseased tissue, thoroughly cleans and shapes the canal system, and seals it with filling material to prevent reinfection. The tooth is then restored with a filling or crown. Root canal therapy eliminates infection, relieves pain, and allows you to keep your natural tooth functioning normally at Minot Dental Partners.
You need root canal treatment when tooth pulp becomes infected or irreversibly inflamed. Common causes include deep decay reaching the pulp, cracks or chips allowing bacteria to enter, trauma damaging pulp even without visible damage, or repeated dental procedures on the tooth. Without treatment, infection spreads into surrounding bone, causing abscesses, severe pain, swelling, and potentially serious health complications. The alternative to root canal therapy is extraction, losing your natural tooth. Root canal treatment saves your tooth, eliminates pain, stops infection spread, and preserves your natural bite and jawbone. Dr. Perkins recommends root canal therapy only when necessary to save teeth that would otherwise require extraction at Minot Dental Partners.
Root canal treatment should not hurt. The procedure itself is performed under local anesthesia, so you won’t feel pain during treatment. You’ll feel pressure and vibration, but no discomfort. Many people fear root canals based on outdated information or stories from decades ago before modern anesthesia and techniques. Today’s root canal therapy is actually more comfortable than having a filling placed. After treatment, some tenderness for a few days is normal as your tooth and surrounding tissues heal, easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Most patients report that root canal treatment relieves their pain rather than causing it. Dr. Perkins uses gentle techniques at Minot Dental Partners, and sedation options are available if you’re anxious about treatment.
Most root canal treatments are completed in one appointment lasting 60 to 90 minutes, depending on which tooth is being treated and canal complexity. Front teeth with single canals take less time than molars with multiple canals. Severely infected teeth may require two appointments with medication placed between visits to ensure complete disinfection. Complex cases with unusual anatomy or calcified canals may take longer. Dr. Perkins will provide an estimated timeframe based on your specific tooth. After root canal therapy, you’ll need a separate appointment, usually within a few weeks, for the permanent restoration. While treatment requires some time investment, it’s comparable to other dental procedures and far less time-consuming than having a tooth extracted and replaced with an implant.
After Dr. Perkins completes root canal therapy at Minot Dental Partners, your tooth will have a temporary filling protecting it until your permanent restoration is placed. You may experience mild tenderness for a few days as healing occurs. Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until it’s permanently restored, as the tooth is more fragile without pulp and protected only by temporary filling. Schedule your follow-up appointment promptly, typically within two to three weeks, to have a permanent filling or crown placed. Most teeth receiving root canal treatment need crowns for long-term protection, especially molars and premolars. Once permanently restored, your tooth functions normally. With good oral hygiene and regular dental care, endodontically treated teeth last many years, often a lifetime.
Most teeth treated with root canal therapy need crowns for long-term protection, though not all require them. During root canal treatment, tooth structure is removed to access pulp, weakening the tooth. Without pulp providing moisture and nutrients, teeth become more brittle and prone to fracturing. Molars and premolars that endure heavy chewing forces almost always need crowns. Front teeth with less functional stress may be adequately restored with fillings if sufficient tooth structure remains. Crowns cover and protect the entire tooth, preventing fractures that could result in tooth loss despite successful root canal therapy. Dr. Perkins evaluates your specific tooth and recommends whether a crown is necessary to protect your investment in root canal treatment at Minot Dental Partners.
Occasionally, root canal-treated teeth develop problems requiring retreatment. Persistent infection, new infection from decay allowing bacteria to reenter, complex anatomy preventing complete cleaning during initial treatment, or restoration failure exposing the tooth to bacteria can cause problems. Sometimes teeth fracture years after treatment. Most root canal failures can be successfully retreated by removing the previous filling material, re-cleaning canals, and resealing them. Success rates for retreatment are good, though typically lower than initial treatment. Some cases may require endodontic surgery or, if retreatment isn’t possible, extraction. However, the vast majority of root canal treatments succeed long-term. Dr. Perkins monitors treated teeth during regular checkups at Minot Dental Partners, catching any problems early when retreatment is most successful.
The only alternative to root canal therapy is tooth extraction. While extraction may seem simpler initially, it creates problems requiring solutions. Missing teeth cause adjacent teeth to shift, opposing teeth to over-erupt, bone loss in the jaw, bite problems, and difficulty chewing. Replacing extracted teeth with dental implants, bridges, or partial dentures is typically more expensive and time-consuming than root canal treatment. Dental implants require surgery and healing time. Bridges require preparing adjacent healthy teeth. Partial dentures are removable and less stable. Saving your natural tooth through root canal therapy is usually the most conservative, cost-effective option providing the best long-term function and esthetics. Dr. Perkins and Dr. Rustemier at Minot Dental Partners will discuss all options, helping you make informed decisions about your dental care.
Root canal treatment costs vary based on which tooth is affected and treatment complexity. Front teeth with single canals cost less than molars with multiple canals. Complex cases requiring additional appointments or advanced techniques may cost more. The cost includes the root canal procedure itself but not the crown or filling placed afterward, which is charged separately. While root canal therapy represents an investment, it’s typically less expensive than extraction followed by implant placement, bridge, or partial denture. Many dental insurance plans cover 50 to 80 percent of root canal costs. Minot Dental Partners provides detailed estimates before treatment and works with financing companies including CareCredit, Sunbit, and Lending Club to offer manageable monthly payment plans.
While root canal therapy saves most infected teeth, some cannot be saved. Teeth with fractures extending below the gum line, insufficient remaining tooth structure to support restoration, severely curved or calcified canals preventing adequate cleaning, or extensive bone loss from periodontal disease may require extraction despite successful root canal therapy. Dr. Perkins evaluates each tooth carefully at Minot Dental Partners, honestly assessing whether endodontic treatment will provide lasting success. If a tooth cannot be saved, extraction is recommended, and Dr. Rustemier can discuss tooth replacement options including dental implants. However, most teeth with infected pulp can be successfully treated with root canal therapy, allowing you to keep your natural tooth functioning normally for many years, often a lifetime.

Dr.Sammy is amazing !! So kind and gentle – you can tell he truly cares and also loves what he does . He is very knowledgable , very good at explaining things . Very thorough .. weighs out pros and cons to help you make an informed decision . Does not push for unnecessary procedures . Looks at the whole picture first before jumping to decisions .. I wanted to switch to Minot dental partners from my prior dental provider because I’ve heard such great things about MDP and when I called to inquire about establishing care they were able to schedule me in the same week!! No months and months of waiting like other places. Dr. Sammy was so nice and so understanding about all of my concerns— great listener , very validating ! The staff are all so nice and you can tell they genuinely enjoy working there and working with eachother .. everyone makes sure your comfortable and feel welcome I also really really appreciate the fact they submit to your insurance first to determine what you may owe and then send you a bill at a later time as applicable rather than making you pay all upfront using an “estimated total” and submitting after you’ve paid Minot dental partners are amazing , I would 10/10 highly recommend .

Awesome experience all the way through. Friendly staff, nice facility, and an inviting atmosphere, would definitely take the edge off of visiting the dentist. I say would because all I had done was a 3d x-ray which is not very nerve wracking like some trips can be be. But I will certainly recommend and request to come here whenever I can. Thanks again

I called morning with a massive cyst underlying two of my lower teeth. Originally I was provided a Tuesday appointment, but when I said that I was in severe pain and hadnt slept for a couple days, and asked if I could at least get a script for painkillers and or antibiotics, Sylvia asked me to hold on for a minute. A couple of minutes later she returned to say that one of the partners would come in to the practice to see me at 12:00. And the frank, no nonsense approach, some great surgery and clear options and post-op instructions just kept getting better and better! And you could tell that this was not a once-off event, the crew knew what they were expected to do, what their values are … This is not only good dentistry, but great patient-focus generated by even better leadership. Thank you. You have probably added at least five years to my life.

My teeth felt so clean without unnecessary pain. She worked on my ugly stains and managed to lift all of them off. I was super impressed and couldn’t be any happier. Sometimes I’d felt that the hygienist did not much and not worth the time and money. But not with Sarah. I’ll go back to her for sure.

We met Dr Perkins a few years ago when my husband chose implants over multiple root canals. Great general dentistry and superior cosmetic dentistry! Regardless of your dental health needs this is a fantastic dental clinic!

Dr. Perkins was very welcoming and professional. As someone with very bad anxiety, this was an unexpectedly pleasant experience and I will be recommending Dr. Perkins to everyone I know. It is very apparent that he cares about his patients and even gives his cell phone number to contact at any time with concerns. Thank you, Minot Dental Partners and especially Dr. Perkins, for such a pleasant experience!
