Your Urgent Care Solution

What Is a Dental Emergency?

Severe tooth pain, facial swelling, or dental trauma demand immediate attention. Waiting risks permanent damage, serious infection, or tooth loss. Emergency dental care provides rapid pain relief and treatment to save teeth and prevent complications.
A dental emergency is any oral health situation requiring immediate professional intervention to stop bleeding, alleviate severe pain, or save a tooth. Common emergencies include knocked-out teeth, severe toothaches, dental abscesses, broken teeth, and uncontrolled oral bleeding. Quick treatment often determines whether teeth can be saved or infections contained.

Anyone experiencing severe dental pain, trauma, or signs of infection needs emergency evaluation immediately. Delaying treatment allows problems to worsen, potentially affecting overall health through spreading infection. Minot Dental Partners in Minot, ND reserves time for emergency patients, providing prompt relief and definitive treatment. Fast action during dental emergencies preserves teeth, prevents complications, and eliminates pain quickly.

Get Immediate Relief

Benefits of Dental Emergency Care

Dental emergency care provides immediate treatment for severe pain, trauma, infections, and other urgent dental problems. It stops intense suffering, saves damaged teeth, and prevents complications from spreading. You receive prompt relief and protection when dental problems threaten your health and comfort.

Immediate Pain Relief

Emergency treatment stops severe toothaches, abscess pain, and trauma discomfort right away. You get relief within hours instead of suffering for days waiting for a regular appointment, ending pain that prevents sleep and normal activities.

Saves Knocked-Out Teeth

Quick treatment after dental trauma can save permanently knocked-out teeth. If you reach emergency care within an hour with proper tooth storage, dentists can often successfully reimplant your tooth, preserving your natural smile.

Prevents Infection Spread

Dental infections can spread to your jaw, sinuses, and bloodstream if untreated. Emergency care eliminates the infection source immediately, protecting you from serious medical complications that develop when dental abscesses are ignored.

Repairs Broken Teeth

Fractured teeth from accidents or biting hard objects receive immediate repair. Emergency treatment protects exposed nerves, prevents further damage, and restores tooth function quickly so you can eat and speak normally again.

Stops Uncontrolled Bleeding

Emergency care controls bleeding from dental trauma, extractions, or gum injuries. You receive proper treatment to stop bleeding safely and promote healing, avoiding complications from excessive blood loss.

Reduces Long-Term Damage

Prompt emergency treatment prevents small problems from becoming major issues. You avoid root canals, extractions, or extensive restorations by getting immediate care that addresses problems before they worsen significantly.

Urgent Dental Care Process

How We Handle Your Dental Emergency

Dental emergencies require prompt attention to relieve pain, stop bleeding, or save an injured tooth. We prioritize emergency patients at Minot Dental Partners and provide immediate care to address urgent dental problems as quickly as possible.
1

Emergency Contact and Triage

When you call with a dental emergency, we ask specific questions about your symptoms to assess the severity and determine how quickly you need to be seen. We provide immediate guidance on what to do while you’re on your way, such as how to control bleeding or preserve a knocked-out tooth. For severe emergencies, we make arrangements to see you the same day, often within hours.
2

Rapid Assessment and Pain Relief

When you arrive, we prioritize examining your emergency condition to identify the source of your pain or injury. Using X-rays and clinical examination, we quickly diagnose the problem, whether it’s an infection, fracture, or soft tissue injury. Our first priority is relieving your pain with appropriate anesthesia and medication, so you’re comfortable while we determine the best treatment approach.
3

Emergency Treatment and Follow-Up Planning

We provide the necessary immediate treatment to stabilize your condition, which might include draining an abscess, starting a root canal, repairing a broken tooth, or extracting a tooth that cannot be saved. We prescribe medications for pain management and infection control, and give you detailed care instructions for the next 24-48 hours. Before you leave, we schedule any follow-up appointments needed to complete your treatment once the emergency situation is resolved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental Emergency FAQs

Dental emergencies require prompt attention to save teeth and relieve pain. These questions help you identify true emergencies, explain what to do until you reach our office, and describe how we handle urgent dental needs at Minot Dental Partners.

What qualifies as a dental emergency?

Dental emergencies include situations threatening teeth or requiring immediate care to relieve severe pain. Knocked-out permanent teeth, severe toothaches not responding to pain medication, broken or fractured teeth with sharp edges or exposed nerves, dental abscesses with swelling affecting breathing or swallowing, significant bleeding that won’t stop, jaw injuries possibly involving fractures, and lost crowns or fillings causing severe pain are true emergencies. Lost or broken orthodontic wires injuring your mouth, objects stuck between teeth you cannot remove, and severe infections with fever and facial swelling also need urgent attention. At Minot Dental Partners, we make every effort to see emergency patients the same day.
Time is critical for knocked-out permanent teeth. Find the tooth immediately and pick it up by the crown, never touching the root. If dirty, gently rinse with water without scrubbing. Try placing the tooth back in its socket facing the correct direction, gently biting down to hold it in place. If you can’t reinsert it, place the tooth in a container of milk, saline solution, or your saliva. Don’t let it dry out. Get to Minot Dental Partners within 30 minutes if possible; chances of saving the tooth decrease significantly after an hour. Call immediately for instructions. Dr. Perkins or Dr. Rustemier will attempt to reimplant and stabilize the tooth. Quick action often means the difference between saving and losing your tooth.
For severe toothache, rinse your mouth with warm water to clean it. Gently floss around the painful tooth to remove any trapped food particles. Take over-the-counter pain medication following package directions. Apply a cold compress to your cheek near the painful area to reduce swelling. Don’t place aspirin or other medications directly on gums, as this can burn tissue. Never ignore severe tooth pain; it indicates serious problems like infection, abscess, or deep decay requiring treatment. Contact Minot Dental Partners immediately. We’ll make every effort to see you the same day. Dr. Perkins will diagnose the problem and provide treatment relieving pain and addressing the underlying cause, whether that’s root canal therapy, extraction, or other appropriate treatment.
For broken or chipped teeth, rinse your mouth with warm water immediately. If there’s bleeding, apply gauze to the area for about 10 minutes or until bleeding stops. Apply a cold compress to your face near the injured area to reduce swelling and relieve pain. Save any tooth fragments if possible and bring them to your appointment. If the break has created sharp edges cutting your tongue or cheek, cover them with sugarless gum or dental wax temporarily. Take over-the-counter pain medication if needed. Contact Minot Dental Partners as soon as possible. Dr. Perkins or Dr. Rustemier will assess the damage and determine appropriate treatment, which might include bonding, crowns, veneers, or root canal therapy depending on severity.
Dental abscesses are serious infections requiring immediate treatment. You’ll typically notice severe toothache, fever, facial swelling, swollen lymph nodes in your neck, foul-tasting drainage, and sensitivity to temperature or pressure. Don’t attempt to drain the abscess yourself. Rinse with warm salt water several times to help draw pus to the surface and provide temporary relief. Take over-the-counter pain medication for discomfort. Contact Minot Dental Partners immediately. Dental abscesses don’t resolve on their own and can spread to your jaw, surrounding tissue, and other body areas, potentially causing life-threatening complications. Dr. Perkins will drain the abscess, prescribe antibiotics, and determine whether the tooth needs root canal therapy or extraction. Prompt treatment is essential.
If your crown falls out, find it if possible and bring it to your appointment. Try sliding it back onto your tooth to protect it temporarily. You can use denture adhesive or temporary dental cement from a pharmacy to hold it in place, but never use super glue or any permanent adhesive. If you’ve lost a filling, clean the cavity gently and cover it with temporary filling material from a pharmacy or sugarless gum. Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth. The tooth is vulnerable without its restoration and needs protection. Contact Minot Dental Partners promptly. We’ll schedule an appointment quickly to recement your crown or replace your filling. Don’t delay, as unprotected teeth can fracture or develop new decay.
Yes, Minot Dental Partners makes every effort to accommodate dental emergencies with same-day appointments. We understand dental emergencies cause pain, anxiety, and disruption to your life. Call our office as soon as you experience a dental emergency, even outside regular business hours. Emergency contact information is available on our voicemail. Explain your situation to our staff, and we’ll schedule you as quickly as possible, often the same day. Dr. Perkins handles many emergencies, while Dr. Rustemier is available for complex extractions, trauma cases, or situations requiring surgical expertise. Both doctors are committed to providing prompt emergency care relieving your pain and addressing urgent dental problems effectively. Don’t hesitate to call when you need immediate attention.
While not all emergencies are preventable, you can significantly reduce risk. Maintain excellent oral hygiene and attend regular dental checkups at Minot Dental Partners so Dr. Perkins detects and treats problems before they become emergencies. Wear mouthguards during sports protecting teeth from trauma. Avoid chewing ice, hard candy, popcorn kernels, or other hard objects that can crack teeth. Don’t use teeth as tools to open packages or bottles. If you grind your teeth, wear a nightguard preventing damage. Address dental problems promptly rather than delaying treatment; small cavities don’t heal themselves and become larger problems requiring more extensive treatment. If you have medical conditions like diabetes affecting oral health, manage them carefully. Prevention and early intervention avoid most dental emergencies.
Every home should have a basic dental emergency kit. Include the phone number for Minot Dental Partners and emergency contact information. Keep temporary dental cement or filling material from a pharmacy, dental wax for covering sharp edges, gauze pads for controlling bleeding, a small container with lid for storing knocked-out teeth, over-the-counter pain reliever appropriate for all family members, and cold compress or ice pack. Include a small flashlight for examining mouths, clean cloth or handkerchief, and disposable gloves. Keep these items together in an easily accessible location. Include any specific items Dr. Perkins recommends for your family’s needs. Having supplies ready means you can provide temporary care effectively while getting to our office for professional treatment.
Most dental insurance plans cover emergency treatment, though coverage varies by plan and treatment type. Emergency exams and X-rays needed to diagnose problems are typically covered as diagnostic procedures. Treatment coverage depends on what’s needed: extractions, root canals, and fillings generally receive partial coverage, while crowns may have different coverage levels or waiting periods. Some plans limit emergency coverage to specific situations or require pre-authorization for expensive treatments, though true emergencies usually bypass these requirements. Minot Dental Partners will verify your specific coverage and provide cost estimates before non-urgent treatment. For true emergencies threatening teeth or causing severe pain, we provide necessary treatment regardless of insurance, then work with you on payment arrangements. Your health and comfort are our priorities.

Dr.Sammy is amazing !! So kind and gentle – you can tell he truly cares and also loves what he does . He is very knowledgable , very good at explaining things . Very thorough .. weighs out pros and cons to help you make an informed decision . Does not push for unnecessary procedures . Looks at the whole picture first before jumping to decisions .. I wanted to switch to Minot dental partners from my prior dental provider because I’ve heard such great things about MDP and when I called to inquire about establishing care they were able to schedule me in the same week!! No months and months of waiting like other places. Dr. Sammy was so nice and so understanding about all of my concerns— great listener , very validating ! The staff are all so nice and you can tell they genuinely enjoy working there and working with eachother .. everyone makes sure your comfortable and feel welcome I also really really appreciate the fact they submit to your insurance first to determine what you may owe and then send you a bill at a later time as applicable rather than making you pay all upfront using an “estimated total” and submitting after you’ve paid Minot dental partners are amazing , I would 10/10 highly recommend .

Awesome experience all the way through. Friendly staff, nice facility, and an inviting atmosphere, would definitely take the edge off of visiting the dentist. I say would because all I had done was a 3d x-ray which is not very nerve wracking like some trips can be be. But I will certainly recommend and request to come here whenever I can. Thanks again

I called morning with a massive cyst underlying two of my lower teeth. Originally I was provided a Tuesday appointment, but when I said that I was in severe pain and hadnt slept for a couple days, and asked if I could at least get a script for painkillers and or antibiotics, Sylvia asked me to hold on for a minute. A couple of minutes later she returned to say that one of the partners would come in to the practice to see me at 12:00. And the frank, no nonsense approach, some great surgery and clear options and post-op instructions just kept getting better and better! And you could tell that this was not a once-off event, the crew knew what they were expected to do, what their values are … This is not only good dentistry, but great patient-focus generated by even better leadership. Thank you. You have probably added at least five years to my life.

My teeth felt so clean without unnecessary pain. She worked on my ugly stains and managed to lift all of them off. I was super impressed and couldn’t be any happier. Sometimes I’d felt that the hygienist did not much and not worth the time and money. But not with Sarah. I’ll go back to her for sure.

We met Dr Perkins a few years ago when my husband chose implants over multiple root canals. Great general dentistry and superior cosmetic dentistry! Regardless of your dental health needs this is a fantastic dental clinic!

Dr. Perkins was very welcoming and professional. As someone with very bad anxiety, this was an unexpectedly pleasant experience and I will be recommending Dr. Perkins to everyone I know. It is very apparent that he cares about his patients and even gives his cell phone number to contact at any time with concerns. Thank you, Minot Dental Partners and especially Dr. Perkins, for such a pleasant experience!
