Your Immediate Preservation Solution

What Is Socket Preservation?

Tooth extraction leaves an empty socket that immediately begins shrinking. Within months, you lose significant bone width and height at the extraction site. Socket preservation grafting prevents this bone loss, maintaining the ridge shape needed for future tooth replacement.
Socket preservation is a preventive bone grafting technique performed immediately after tooth extraction. The procedure involves filling the empty tooth socket with bone graft material and covering it with a protective membrane or tissue graft. This immediate intervention prevents the natural collapse and resorption that occurs when sockets heal empty.

This treatment benefits any patient having a tooth extracted who plans future implant placement or wants to maintain bone volume. The grafting material fills the void left by the extracted tooth root, maintaining the socket walls while new bone forms. Minot Dental Partners in Minot, ND recommends socket preservation whenever extraction occurs in visible areas or future implant sites. The preserved bone dimensions eliminate or reduce the need for more extensive grafting procedures later.

Protect Future Implant Sites

Benefits of Socket Preservation

Socket preservation places bone graft material into the extraction site immediately after tooth removal. It maintains bone width and height, prevents socket collapse, and prepares the area for future implant placement. You’ll avoid the need for additional grafting later and ensure the best possible foundation for your replacement tooth.

Prevents Bone Collapse After Extraction

Your jawbone begins shrinking within weeks of losing a tooth. Socket preservation maintains the original bone dimensions, keeping your jaw ridge at the proper height and width for implant placement down the road.

Simplifies Future Implant Surgery

You’ll likely avoid additional bone grafting when you’re ready for your implant. The preserved socket provides adequate bone volume, making implant placement more straightforward and reducing your total treatment time.

Maintains Gum Tissue Aesthetics

Bone loss causes gums to recede and creates an unnatural appearance. Socket preservation supports healthy gum contours, ensuring your future implant crown looks natural and matches your surrounding teeth perfectly.

Completed During Same Appointment

The grafting material is placed right after your tooth extraction while the area is already numb. You don’t need to schedule a separate procedure, and healing happens during the natural extraction recovery period.

Reduces Overall Treatment Cost

Preserving bone now costs less than rebuilding it later. You avoid the expense and time of a second grafting surgery, and your implant procedure becomes more predictable with fewer potential complications.

Heals Quickly and Comfortably

Recovery feels similar to a standard extraction. Most patients experience mild soreness that resolves within days, and the graft material integrates naturally while the extraction site heals over three to four months.

Protecting Your Future Options

Who Is Socket Preservation For?

After a tooth extraction, the surrounding bone begins shrinking immediately, often by 40 to 60 percent within the first year. Socket preservation places graft material into the empty socket right after extraction, maintaining bone volume and making future implant placement easier and more successful.

Planning a Future Implant

If you’re having a tooth removed and know you’ll want an implant later, socket preservation keeps the bone intact so the site stays ready for implant placement.

Not Ready for an Implant Yet

Financial or timing considerations mean you can’t place an implant immediately, but preserving the socket now prevents bone loss that would complicate treatment later.

Maintaining Your Bone and Gum Tissue

Even if you’re unsure about implants, socket preservation prevents the sunken appearance and bone shrinkage that occurs naturally after extraction, keeping your options open.

Do Any of These Situations Sound Familiar to You?

These common situations suggest that socket preservation should be part of your extraction treatment plan.

Protecting Bone After Extraction

Socket Preservation Following Tooth Removal

Socket preservation prevents bone loss immediately after tooth extraction by filling the empty socket with graft material. We perform this procedure at Minot Dental Partners to maintain your jawbone volume for future implant placement.
1

Extraction and Socket Preparation

We remove your tooth carefully and clean the socket thoroughly to remove any infected tissue or debris. Immediately after extraction, we examine the socket walls to assess bone quality and determine the amount of graft material needed. This same-visit approach prevents the bone loss that naturally begins within days of tooth removal.
2

Graft Material Placement

We fill the empty socket with bone graft material and often cover it with a protective membrane or collagen plug to hold everything in place. This material acts as a scaffold that guides your body to form new bone in the socket rather than allowing it to collapse or fill with soft tissue. The procedure adds minimal time to your extraction appointment and significantly improves future treatment options.
3

Healing and Bone Maintenance

Over the next three to six months, the graft material integrates with your existing bone and preserves the socket’s original width and height. We schedule follow-up visits to ensure proper healing and monitor bone development. When you’re ready for an implant, the preserved bone provides an ideal site without the need for additional grafting procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Socket Preservation FAQs

Socket preservation maintains bone after tooth extraction. These questions explain how this preventive procedure helps you avoid more extensive bone grafting later and prepares your jaw for future implants.

What is socket preservation and why is it important?

Socket preservation is a bone grafting technique performed immediately when a tooth is extracted. When we remove a tooth, the empty socket left behind naturally fills with soft tissue rather than bone. The surrounding bone also begins deteriorating rapidly because it no longer receives stimulation from the tooth root. Socket preservation involves placing bone graft material into the socket right after extraction, maintaining the bone volume and shape needed for future dental implant placement. This simple preventive procedure helps you avoid more extensive and expensive bone grafting later. Dr. Rustemier routinely performs socket preservation at Minot Dental Partners when patients plan to replace extracted teeth with implants.
A regular extraction involves removing the tooth and allowing the socket to heal naturally on its own. The wound fills with soft tissue, and surrounding bone shrinks considerably. Socket preservation adds just one step: immediately after removing the tooth, we clean the socket thoroughly and fill it with bone graft material. A protective membrane or collagen plug may be placed over the graft to hold it in place. The gums are then sutured closed and healing begins. This minor addition to your extraction appointment preserves bone that would otherwise be lost, potentially saving you from needing complex grafting procedures later.
Socket preservation typically doesn’t cause significantly more discomfort than extraction alone. The most uncomfortable part is the extraction itself. Adding graft material to the socket takes just a few extra minutes and causes minimal additional discomfort. After the procedure, any soreness you feel is primarily from the extraction rather than the grafting. Most patients manage post-operative discomfort effectively with over-the-counter or prescribed pain medication. Ice packs help reduce swelling during the first few days. Recovery time and restrictions are virtually identical to regular extraction. Minot Dental Partners offers sedation options if you’re anxious about the procedure.
Socket preservation sites typically heal within three to four months, after which dental implants can usually be placed. Initial soft tissue healing over the socket takes about two weeks. During the following months, the graft material gradually becomes incorporated into your bone, creating solid structure. This healing period is actually shorter than the bone loss that occurs with regular extraction followed by later grafting. Some patients can have implants placed sooner, while others need slightly longer healing times depending on socket size and bone quality. Dr. Rustemier will evaluate your healing progress and determine the optimal timing for implant placement.
Sometimes immediate implant placement is possible during the same appointment as extraction and socket preservation. This works best when infection isn’t present, the socket walls are intact and thick enough for stability, and adequate bone exists beyond the socket itself. Dr. Rustemier evaluates each case individually using Cone Beam CT imaging to determine whether immediate placement is appropriate. Not every situation allows this approach, but when possible, it can save you a surgical appointment and shorten overall treatment time. Even with immediate placement, socket preservation around the implant helps ensure long-term success by maintaining surrounding bone volume.
Several types of bone graft material work effectively for socket preservation. Processed donor bone (allograft) is commonly used and has excellent success rates. Synthetic bone substitutes also work well and completely eliminate any concerns about using donated tissue. Sometimes we use a combination of materials. Many socket grafts include a protective membrane or collagen material placed over the graft to keep it contained while healing. Dr. Rustemier selects the most appropriate material for your specific situation. All materials used at Minot Dental Partners are thoroughly tested, FDA-approved, and proven safe and effective for bone regeneration.
Post-operative care is similar to regular tooth extraction with a few additional precautions. Don’t disturb the socket with your tongue, rinse aggressively, or use straws, as these actions can dislodge the graft. Stick to soft foods for several days and avoid chewing directly on the grafted area. Don’t smoke, as this significantly compromises healing. Sleep with your head elevated for the first few nights to minimize swelling. Avoid strenuous exercise for about a week. We’ll prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection and pain medication for comfort. Most restrictions ease within two weeks, though complete bone healing takes several months.
Socket preservation adds to extraction costs, but it’s significantly less expensive than bone grafting needed later if socket preservation isn’t performed. Consider it a cost-effective investment in your future implant treatment. The exact amount varies based on the socket size and materials used. When you factor in that socket preservation often eliminates need for more extensive grafting later, it actually reduces your overall treatment costs. Many dental insurance plans cover socket preservation when it’s performed at the time of extraction. Minot Dental Partners will provide complete cost information before your procedure so you can make an informed decision.
Without socket preservation, you can expect to lose 40 to 60% of bone width and significant height in the extraction area within the first year. This bone loss can make future implant placement more difficult or impossible without extensive grafting. Your adjacent teeth may shift into the gap, and opposing teeth may over-erupt, causing bite problems. Facial appearance can change as bone loss affects your profile. While you can still get an implant later, you’ll likely need more invasive and expensive bone grafting procedures. Socket preservation is a simple preventive measure that helps you avoid these complications and ensures the best foundation for future tooth replacement.
Not every extraction requires socket preservation. If you’re not planning to replace the tooth with an implant, preservation may be unnecessary. Teeth in areas where esthetics aren’t critical might not need it. If you have excellent bone density and the socket walls are very thick, some healing occurs naturally. However, most patients planning implant placement benefit significantly from socket preservation. The minimal additional cost and slight increase in post-operative care requirements are worthwhile investments in your future treatment success. Dr. Rustemier will evaluate your specific situation and recommend socket preservation only when it provides meaningful benefit for your treatment goals.

Dr.Sammy is amazing !! So kind and gentle – you can tell he truly cares and also loves what he does . He is very knowledgable , very good at explaining things . Very thorough .. weighs out pros and cons to help you make an informed decision . Does not push for unnecessary procedures . Looks at the whole picture first before jumping to decisions .. I wanted to switch to Minot dental partners from my prior dental provider because I’ve heard such great things about MDP and when I called to inquire about establishing care they were able to schedule me in the same week!! No months and months of waiting like other places. Dr. Sammy was so nice and so understanding about all of my concerns— great listener , very validating ! The staff are all so nice and you can tell they genuinely enjoy working there and working with eachother .. everyone makes sure your comfortable and feel welcome I also really really appreciate the fact they submit to your insurance first to determine what you may owe and then send you a bill at a later time as applicable rather than making you pay all upfront using an “estimated total” and submitting after you’ve paid Minot dental partners are amazing , I would 10/10 highly recommend .

I called morning with a massive cyst underlying two of my lower teeth. Originally I was provided a Tuesday appointment, but when I said that I was in severe pain and hadnt slept for a couple days, and asked if I could at least get a script for painkillers and or antibiotics, Sylvia asked me to hold on for a minute. A couple of minutes later she returned to say that one of the partners would come in to the practice to see me at 12:00. And the frank, no nonsense approach, some great surgery and clear options and post-op instructions just kept getting better and better! And you could tell that this was not a once-off event, the crew knew what they were expected to do, what their values are … This is not only good dentistry, but great patient-focus generated by even better leadership. Thank you. You have probably added at least five years to my life.

Sarah, my dental hygienist did such a great job! Through the years, I’ve had many hygienists worked on my teeth and Sarah was my lasted one and she did magic! My teeth felt so clean without unnecessary pain. She worked on my ugly stains and managed to lift all of them off. I was super impressed and couldn’t be any happier.
