Your Jaw Contour Restoration

What Is Ridge Augmentation?

Tooth loss causes your alveolar ridge (the bone supporting teeth) to deteriorate and flatten. This creates unsightly defects and insufficient bone width for implants. Ridge augmentation rebuilds the natural contour and dimensions of your jaw ridge.
Ridge augmentation is a bone grafting procedure that restores the height and width of your alveolar ridge after bone resorption. The technique involves placing bone graft material along the diminished ridge area and securing it with membranes or titanium mesh. This reconstruction recreates the natural jaw contours necessary for both functional dental restorations and aesthetic appearance.

Patients with visible ridge defects or insufficient bone width for implant placement require this treatment. The procedure addresses both horizontal and vertical bone loss that occurs after tooth extraction or periodontal disease. Minot Dental Partners in Minot, ND sculpts the augmented ridge to match your natural anatomy and facial proportions. Once healed, the restored ridge provides adequate bone volume for implant placement while improving the appearance of bridges or dentures.

Rebuild Your Jawbone Ridge

Benefits of Ridge Augmentation

Ridge augmentation restores width and height to your jawbone ridge after tooth loss or trauma. It creates the proper bone contours for implant placement, improves the fit of dentures, and corrects deformities that affect your smile appearance. You’ll have adequate bone structure for stable, long-lasting tooth replacement options.

Creates Space for Proper Implants

You gain the bone width and height needed to place implants at the correct angle and depth. Ridge augmentation ensures your replacement teeth emerge from the gums naturally, matching your surrounding teeth in position and appearance.

Improves Denture Fit and Comfort

A flat or narrow ridge makes dentures unstable and painful. Augmentation rebuilds the ridge shape, providing better support for dentures and reducing sore spots caused by inadequate bone underneath the appliance.

Corrects Visible Ridge Defects

Bone loss creates indentations and irregularities in your gum line that show when you smile. Ridge augmentation fills these defects, restoring smooth, natural contours that improve your overall smile aesthetics dramatically.

Supports Multiple Implants

You can receive several implants in a row for a bridge or multiple single teeth. Adequate ridge width and height allow proper spacing between implants, creating a stable foundation for complex restorations.

Performed with Various Techniques

Augmentation can use bone graft material, specialized membranes, or tissue expansion methods depending on your needs. Your dentist selects the approach that provides the best results for your specific bone defect.

Predictable Healing Process

Ridge augmentation heals within four to six months, and success rates are consistently high. Once complete, the augmented ridge functions like natural bone, supporting implants or dentures reliably for many years without additional grafting.

Rebuilding Your Gum Ridge

Who Is Ridge Augmentation For?

Tooth loss causes the surrounding bone ridge to deteriorate and become uneven or too narrow for implants or proper denture fit. Ridge augmentation rebuilds the width and height of the ridge, creating adequate structure for implant placement or improving how dentures rest on your gums.

Ridge Is Too Narrow or Flat

Years without teeth have caused your jawbone ridge to shrink so much that it can’t support implants properly or provide a stable base for dentures.

Uneven or Defective Ridge

Extractions, injuries, or birth defects left an irregular ridge that creates gaps under bridges or dentures, trapping food and causing discomfort or aesthetic concerns.

Need Width for Stable Implants

Your ridge has adequate height but lacks the thickness necessary to surround an implant completely, which is essential for long-term stability and success.

Do Any of These Situations Sound Familiar to You?

If these describe your situation, ridge augmentation could provide the foundation you need for successful tooth replacement.

Restoring Jaw Ridge Width

Ridge Augmentation for Implant Stability Process

Ridge augmentation rebuilds the width and shape of your jawbone ridge when it has become too narrow or uneven for dental implants. We use this technique at Minot Dental Partners to create the ideal bone contours for successful restorations.
1

Assessment and Contour Planning

We evaluate your jaw ridge with 3D imaging to identify areas where the bone has thinned or collapsed, often due to long-term tooth loss or gum disease. This assessment shows us exactly where we need to add width and how much augmentation is necessary. We explain how rebuilding the ridge will improve both implant success and the natural appearance of your final restoration.
2

Graft Placement and Ridge Expansion

We make a precise incision along your gum line and place bone graft material directly onto the narrow ridge to build out its width. In some cases, we use special expandable materials or techniques to stretch the existing bone gradually. We secure the graft with a membrane covering and close the tissue carefully to protect the site during healing.
3

Integration and Ridge Development

The graft material fuses with your natural bone over four to six months, creating a wider, stronger ridge. We monitor your progress to ensure the augmented area is developing properly and maintaining its new shape. Once healed, the enhanced ridge provides adequate width for stable implant placement and supports the gum tissue for a natural-looking smile line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ridge Augmentation FAQs

Ridge augmentation rebuilds the width and height of your jawbone ridge. These questions help you understand when this focused grafting technique is necessary and how it restores proper bone dimensions for implants.

What is ridge augmentation and when is it needed?

Ridge augmentation is a bone grafting procedure that rebuilds the width, height, or both dimensions of your alveolar ridge—the bone that holds your teeth. When teeth are lost, the surrounding ridge naturally deteriorates and becomes too narrow or shallow for dental implant placement. Advanced gum disease, trauma, infections, or congenital defects can also cause ridge defects. Ridge augmentation places bone graft material along the top and sides of your existing ridge, expanding it to the proper dimensions. Dr. Rustemier performs ridge augmentation at Minot Dental Partners to create the foundation necessary for stable implants and natural-appearing restorations.
The procedure begins with an incision along your gum tissue to expose the deficient ridge. We carefully place bone graft material along the ridge, building up width and height as needed. A protective membrane is often placed over the graft to hold it in position and encourage bone regeneration. Sometimes small titanium screws temporarily hold the graft in place; these are removed later once bone has formed. The gum tissue is then repositioned and sutured closed. Minot Dental Partners offers IV sedation administered by a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist for your comfort during the procedure. The surgery typically takes one to two hours depending on the extent of augmentation needed.
Ridge augmentation specifically addresses horizontal width and vertical height deficiencies along the top of your jawbone ridge. Socket preservation prevents ridge collapse after extraction. Sinus lifts add height only in the upper jaw beneath sinuses. Major grafts reconstruct large defects from trauma or disease. Ridge augmentation is more extensive than socket preservation but less involved than major grafting. It creates the proper ridge contour needed for dental implants to be positioned correctly and for your restorations to emerge naturally from your gums. The technique is specifically designed to restore ideal ridge dimensions for functional and esthetic implant placement.
You won’t experience pain during ridge augmentation because we thoroughly numb the area with local anesthesia. Sedation options are available for additional comfort and relaxation. Afterward, expect some soreness and swelling for several days, similar to other oral surgery procedures. Most patients manage discomfort effectively with prescribed pain medication and ice packs. The grafted area may feel bulky or swollen for a couple of weeks as initial healing occurs. Discomfort typically subsides within a week. The months-long integration process that follows is painless as your body gradually incorporates the graft into living bone. Most patients return to normal activities within several days.
Ridge augmentation requires four to six months for adequate healing before implants can be placed. During this period, the graft material gradually becomes incorporated into your existing bone, creating strong, stable structure. Initial soft tissue healing occurs within two weeks, but bone remodeling continues for several months. Larger augmentation sites may need six to nine months. The timeframe depends on graft size, materials used, and your individual healing capacity. While waiting seems lengthy, proper integration is essential for implant success. Dr. Rustemier monitors your progress through follow-up appointments and determines when your ridge has healed sufficiently for implant placement.
Several bone graft materials work effectively for ridge augmentation. Your own bone (autograft) harvested from your jaw provides excellent results but requires a second surgical site. Processed donor bone (allograft) eliminates the need for harvest and works very well. Xenografts from animal sources, typically bovine, are another option. Synthetic bone substitutes are increasingly popular and proven effective. Many ridge augmentations use combinations of materials to optimize results. A protective membrane, often made from collagen or synthetic material, typically covers the graft. Dr. Rustemier selects the most appropriate materials based on your augmentation size, location, and treatment goals.
Sometimes ridge augmentation and implant placement can be performed during the same procedure, potentially saving you a surgical appointment and shortening overall treatment time. This works when you have a strong base of existing bone that can initially stabilize the implant, with augmentation needed only to build around it. However, many ridge augmentations are extensive enough that implants cannot be placed simultaneously. Attempting both procedures at once when bone is insufficient risks implant failure. Dr. Rustemier uses Cone Beam CT imaging to evaluate your bone carefully and determine whether simultaneous treatment is feasible or whether staged procedures will provide better long-term results.
Protecting your graft during healing is crucial for success. Don’t disturb the surgical area with your tongue or fingers. Stick to soft foods and avoid chewing on the grafted side. Don’t smoke, as this dramatically increases failure risk. Avoid strenuous exercise for two weeks to prevent increased bleeding or swelling. Sleep with your head elevated initially to minimize swelling. Rinse gently; don’t spit forcefully. Avoid pulling your lip or cheek to look at the surgical site, as this can disrupt healing. We’ll prescribe antibiotics and pain medication. Most restrictions ease within two weeks, though complete bone integration takes several months.
Ridge augmentation has good success rates, typically 85 to 95%, when performed by experienced providers. Success depends on factors including augmentation size, graft materials used, your overall health, smoking status, and how well you follow post-operative instructions. Smaller augmentations generally have higher success rates than extensive reconstructions. Your own bone often produces the most predictable results but isn’t always necessary. Dr. Rustemier’s focused training in periodontics and bone grafting, combined with advanced imaging technology at Minot Dental Partners, maximizes your chances of successful ridge augmentation even in challenging cases. Most patients go on to receive stable implants after proper healing.
Ridge augmentation costs vary based on the size of the defect, materials used, and whether membranes or fixation screws are needed. Minor ridge augmentation for a single implant site costs less than extensive augmentation for multiple areas. The procedure is more expensive than socket preservation but less costly than major grafting requiring bone harvest from your hip. While augmentation adds to overall implant treatment costs, it’s essential when your ridge lacks adequate dimensions for implant success. Many dental insurance plans provide partial coverage. Minot Dental Partners works with financing companies including CareCredit, Sunbit, and Lending Club to make treatment accessible through manageable payment plans.

Dr.Sammy is amazing !! So kind and gentle – you can tell he truly cares and also loves what he does . He is very knowledgable , very good at explaining things . Very thorough .. weighs out pros and cons to help you make an informed decision . Does not push for unnecessary procedures . Looks at the whole picture first before jumping to decisions .. I wanted to switch to Minot dental partners from my prior dental provider because I’ve heard such great things about MDP and when I called to inquire about establishing care they were able to schedule me in the same week!! No months and months of waiting like other places. Dr. Sammy was so nice and so understanding about all of my concerns— great listener , very validating ! The staff are all so nice and you can tell they genuinely enjoy working there and working with eachother .. everyone makes sure your comfortable and feel welcome I also really really appreciate the fact they submit to your insurance first to determine what you may owe and then send you a bill at a later time as applicable rather than making you pay all upfront using an “estimated total” and submitting after you’ve paid Minot dental partners are amazing , I would 10/10 highly recommend .

I called morning with a massive cyst underlying two of my lower teeth. Originally I was provided a Tuesday appointment, but when I said that I was in severe pain and hadnt slept for a couple days, and asked if I could at least get a script for painkillers and or antibiotics, Sylvia asked me to hold on for a minute. A couple of minutes later she returned to say that one of the partners would come in to the practice to see me at 12:00. And the frank, no nonsense approach, some great surgery and clear options and post-op instructions just kept getting better and better! And you could tell that this was not a once-off event, the crew knew what they were expected to do, what their values are … This is not only good dentistry, but great patient-focus generated by even better leadership. Thank you. You have probably added at least five years to my life.

Sarah, my dental hygienist did such a great job! Through the years, I’ve had many hygienists worked on my teeth and Sarah was my lasted one and she did magic! My teeth felt so clean without unnecessary pain. She worked on my ugly stains and managed to lift all of them off. I was super impressed and couldn’t be any happier.
