Your Third Molar Solution

What Is Wisdom Teeth Removal?

Wisdom teeth often lack space to emerge properly, causing pain, infection, and damage to adjacent teeth. These third molars serve no functional purpose in modern mouths. Preventive removal eliminates current problems and prevents future complications from impacted wisdom teeth.
Wisdom teeth removal is the surgical extraction of third molars that are impacted, problematic, or likely to cause future issues. The procedure ranges from simple extraction of erupted teeth to surgical removal of deeply impacted ones. Most patients have all four wisdom teeth removed in a single appointment for convenience and recovery efficiency.

Teenagers and young adults typically need wisdom teeth evaluation between ages 15-25 when roots are forming. Earlier removal means easier surgery and faster healing compared to extraction in later years. Minot Dental Partners in Minot, ND uses 3D imaging to evaluate wisdom tooth position and plan the safest extraction approach. IV sedation options ensure comfortable treatment even for complex surgical extractions.

Prevent Future Problems

Benefits of Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth removal extracts third molars that don’t have adequate space to erupt properly. It prevents crowding, infection, and damage to adjacent teeth caused by impacted wisdom teeth. You avoid pain and complications by removing these teeth before problems develop, protecting your oral health long-term.

Prevents Crowding and Shifting

Erupting wisdom teeth push on adjacent molars, causing teeth to shift and crowd. Removing wisdom teeth before they fully emerge protects the straight alignment you have naturally or achieved through braces.

Avoids Recurring Infections

Partially erupted wisdom teeth trap food and bacteria under the gum flap, causing painful infections. Extraction eliminates this recurring problem permanently, ending the cycle of swelling, pain, and antibiotic treatments.

Protects Neighboring Teeth

Impacted wisdom teeth can damage the roots of adjacent molars, causing decay or requiring root canals. Early removal prevents this damage, preserving your second molars that are crucial for effective chewing function.

Easier Surgery When Young

Wisdom teeth removal is simpler and heals faster in your late teens and early twenties. Roots are less developed and bone is less dense, making extraction easier with quicker recovery compared to waiting until your thirties or forties.

Prevents Cyst Formation

Impacted wisdom teeth can develop fluid-filled cysts that destroy surrounding jawbone. Removing wisdom teeth before cysts form protects your jaw structure and eliminates the need for more extensive surgery to remove cysts later.

Preventing Future Problems

Who Is Wisdom Teeth Removal For?

Wisdom teeth often lack adequate space to emerge properly, becoming impacted and causing pain, infection, or damage to adjacent teeth. Removing problematic wisdom teeth prevents complications and protects your other teeth from crowding or damage.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Your wisdom teeth are stuck beneath the gums or growing sideways, causing pain, swelling, or infection that won’t resolve without extraction.

Preventing Future Complications

X-rays show your wisdom teeth will cause problems even if they’re not painful yet, and removing them now prevents infection, cysts, or damage to neighboring teeth.

Recurring Pain or Infection

Your wisdom teeth partially emerged but can’t be cleaned properly, leading to repeated infections, swelling, or discomfort that disrupts your daily life.

Do Any of These Situations Sound Familiar to You?

These symptoms often indicate that wisdom teeth removal is necessary to protect your oral health and prevent ongoing problems.

Third Molar Extraction Process

How We Remove Your Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth removal prevents crowding, infection, and damage to adjacent teeth caused by these late-developing molars. We extract wisdom teeth at Minot Dental Partners using careful surgical techniques and appropriate sedation to ensure your comfort and safety.
1

Pre-Surgical Evaluation and Sedation

We review 3D X-rays of your wisdom teeth to understand their position, root structure, and relationship to nearby nerves before surgery. Based on the complexity of your case and your preference, we discuss anesthesia options ranging from local numbing to IV sedation. Once you’re comfortable and properly sedated, we prepare the surgical sites and ensure you feel no discomfort.
2

Surgical Extraction Process

We make incisions in your gum tissue to expose the wisdom teeth and any surrounding bone that needs to be removed for access. For impacted teeth, we may section them into smaller pieces to extract them more easily and reduce trauma to surrounding tissues. We carefully remove each tooth, clean the socket thoroughly, and check that no root fragments remain.
3

Socket Management and Recovery Care

We place dissolvable stitches to close the extraction sites and help control bleeding, then position gauze for you to bite down on. Before you leave, we provide detailed post-operative instructions and prescriptions for pain management and infection prevention. We schedule a follow-up visit to monitor your healing and address any concerns during your recovery period.

Frequently Asked Questions

Wisdom Teeth Removal FAQs

Wisdom teeth removal prevents problems caused by these final molars. These questions address when extraction is necessary, what to expect during recovery, and why early removal often prevents complications at Minot Dental Partners.

What are wisdom teeth and why do they cause problems?

Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, are the last teeth to develop, typically emerging in late teens or early twenties. Most people develop four wisdom teeth, one in each corner of the mouth. Problems arise because modern human jaws are often too small to accommodate these additional molars. When insufficient space exists, wisdom teeth become impacted, meaning they cannot erupt properly and remain trapped in the jawbone or gums. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, infection, damage to adjacent teeth, cysts, gum disease, and crowding. Even wisdom teeth that do erupt often cannot be cleaned properly due to their position, leading to decay and gum problems. Dr. Rustemier evaluates wisdom teeth at Minot Dental Partners using advanced imaging.
Several signs indicate wisdom teeth need removal. You might experience pain, swelling, or stiffness in your jaw near wisdom teeth. Repeated infections in gum tissue around partially erupted wisdom teeth signal problems. Damage to adjacent teeth from pressure or decay spreading from wisdom teeth necessitates removal. Cysts can develop around impacted wisdom teeth, damaging bone and roots of nearby teeth. Crowding of front teeth sometimes occurs when wisdom teeth push forward. However, many problematic wisdom teeth cause no symptoms initially. That’s why Dr. Rustemier evaluates wisdom teeth during routine exams at Minot Dental Partners using X-rays and clinical examination, often recommending removal before problems develop. Early removal typically involves easier surgery and faster recovery.
The ideal time for wisdom teeth removal is typically late teens to early twenties, before roots fully develop and bone becomes denser. Younger patients generally experience easier extractions, faster healing, and fewer complications. By the mid-twenties, wisdom tooth roots are fully formed, making removal more complex. Bone density increases with age, sometimes requiring more extensive surgery. Recovery takes longer and complication risk increases in older patients. However, age alone doesn’t determine timing; your specific situation matters most. Some people can keep their wisdom teeth if they erupt properly, have adequate space, and can be cleaned effectively. Dr. Rustemier evaluates wisdom teeth positioning and development at Minot Dental Partners, recommending removal timing based on your individual needs.
Wisdom teeth extraction difficulty depends on whether teeth are impacted and their position. For erupted wisdom teeth, extraction resembles removing any other tooth. Dr. Rustemier numbs the area, loosens the tooth, and removes it. Impacted wisdom teeth require surgical extraction. After numbing the area thoroughly, Dr. Rustemier makes an incision in gum tissue to access the tooth, possibly removing some bone surrounding it. Sometimes the tooth is sectioned into pieces for easier removal. Once the tooth is out, the area is cleaned and sutured closed. Minot Dental Partners offers IV sedation administered by a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, allowing you to remain comfortable and unaware throughout surgery. The procedure typically takes 45 to 90 minutes for all four wisdom teeth.
You won’t feel pain during wisdom teeth extraction because we thoroughly numb your mouth with local anesthesia. Many patients choose IV sedation at Minot Dental Partners, remaining deeply relaxed and largely unaware during surgery, remembering little afterward. After surgery, once numbness wears off, expect soreness and swelling for several days. Most patients describe discomfort as manageable with prescribed pain medication. Discomfort typically peaks around day two or three, then steadily improves. Many patients need only over-the-counter pain relievers after the first couple days. Following post-operative instructions carefully, including using ice packs, eating soft foods, and resting, minimizes discomfort and promotes smooth healing. Most patients return to normal activities within a week.
Initial recovery takes about one week, though complete healing requires several weeks. Expect swelling and bruising peaking around day two or three, then gradually improving. Stick to soft, cool foods initially, gradually reintroducing regular diet as comfort allows. Rest for the first few days, avoiding strenuous activity that could cause bleeding. Don’t use straws, smoke, or spit forcefully, as these create suction that can dislodge blood clots. Keep the surgical area clean with gentle rinsing after 24 hours. Take prescribed pain medication and antibiotics as directed. Most people return to work or school within three to five days. Plan to have someone drive you home after surgery and stay with you initially if you had sedation.
Dry socket occurs when the blood clot protecting the extraction site becomes dislodged, exposing bone and nerves. This causes severe throbbing pain typically starting three to four days after extraction and is the most common wisdom teeth complication. Prevent dry socket by following post-operative instructions carefully: don’t smoke or use tobacco for at least 72 hours (preferably longer), avoid straws and drinking from bottles, don’t rinse vigorously or spit forcefully, avoid carbonated beverages, and don’t probe the extraction site with your tongue. Women taking birth control pills have increased risk. If you develop intense pain days after extraction not responding to medication, contact Minot Dental Partners immediately. Dr. Rustemier can place medicated dressing in the socket to relieve pain and promote healing.
Removing all four wisdom teeth during one appointment is common and usually recommended if all need extraction. Benefits include undergoing anesthesia once, taking time off work or school once, and recovering from all extractions simultaneously rather than repeating the process multiple times. Most patients prefer completing wisdom teeth removal in a single procedure. However, some situations may warrant removing teeth in stages, such as if only some teeth are problematic, if you have anxiety about extensive surgery, or if medical conditions complicate longer procedures. Dr. Rustemier will evaluate your specific situation at Minot Dental Partners and recommend the approach best balancing efficiency, safety, and comfort for your individual needs. Most healthy patients do well having all four removed together.
You’ll need dietary modifications during recovery. Start with liquids and soft, cool foods like smoothies, yogurt, ice cream, pudding, and protein shakes immediately after surgery. After 24 hours, add soft foods requiring minimal chewing, like mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, pasta, and soup (not too hot). Gradually reintroduce firmer foods as healing progresses and comfort allows, typically after a week. Avoid hard, crunchy, chewy, spicy, or acidic foods that could irritate extraction sites. Don’t eat chips, nuts, popcorn, raw vegetables, or anything requiring vigorous chewing until sites have healed substantially. Chew on the opposite side from extraction sites when possible. Stay well-hydrated but avoid straws. Most patients return to relatively normal eating within two weeks.
Wisdom teeth removal costs vary significantly based on tooth position, whether they’re impacted, how many teeth are being removed, anesthesia type chosen, and complexity of surgery. Removing four impacted wisdom teeth costs more than extracting four erupted teeth. Surgical extraction requires more time and expertise than simple extraction. IV sedation adds to costs but provides superior comfort for most patients. Many dental insurance plans cover wisdom teeth removal at least partially, typically 50 to 80 percent, though coverage varies by plan. Minot Dental Partners will verify your specific benefits and provide detailed cost estimates before surgery. We work with multiple financing companies including CareCredit, Lending Club, and Sunbit to offer manageable monthly payment plans, making necessary wisdom teeth removal affordable and accessible.

Dr.Sammy is amazing !! So kind and gentle – you can tell he truly cares and also loves what he does . He is very knowledgable , very good at explaining things . Very thorough .. weighs out pros and cons to help you make an informed decision . Does not push for unnecessary procedures . Looks at the whole picture first before jumping to decisions .. I wanted to switch to Minot dental partners from my prior dental provider because I’ve heard such great things about MDP and when I called to inquire about establishing care they were able to schedule me in the same week!! No months and months of waiting like other places. Dr. Sammy was so nice and so understanding about all of my concerns— great listener , very validating ! The staff are all so nice and you can tell they genuinely enjoy working there and working with eachother .. everyone makes sure your comfortable and feel welcome I also really really appreciate the fact they submit to your insurance first to determine what you may owe and then send you a bill at a later time as applicable rather than making you pay all upfront using an “estimated total” and submitting after you’ve paid Minot dental partners are amazing , I would 10/10 highly recommend .

Awesome experience all the way through. Friendly staff, nice facility, and an inviting atmosphere, would definitely take the edge off of visiting the dentist. I called morning with a massive cyst underlying two of my lower teeth. Originally I was provided a Tuesday appointment, but when I said that I was in severe pain and hadnt slept for a couple days, and asked if I could at least get a script for painkillers and or antibiotics, Sylvia asked me to hold on for a minute. A couple of minutes later she returned to say that one of the partners would come in to the practice to see me at 12:00. And the frank, no nonsense approach, some great surgery and clear options and post-op instructions just kept getting better and better! And you could tell that this was not a once-off event, the crew knew what they were expected to do, what their values are … This is not only good dentistry, but great patient-focus generated by even better leadership. Thank you. You have probably added at least five years to my life.

Sarah, my dental hygienist did such a great job! Through the years, I’ve had many hygienists worked on my teeth and Sarah was my lasted one and she did magic! My teeth felt so clean without unnecessary pain. She worked on my ugly stains and managed to lift all of them off. I was super impressed and couldn’t be any happier. Sometimes I’d felt that the hygienist did not much and not worth the time and money. But not with Sarah. I’ll go back to her for sure.

We met Dr Perkins a few years ago when my husband chose implants over multiple root canals. Great general dentistry and superior cosmetic dentistry! Regardless of your dental health needs this is a fantastic dental clinic!

Dr. Perkins was very welcoming and professional. As someone with very bad anxiety, this was an unexpectedly pleasant experience and I will be recommending Dr. Perkins to everyone I know. It is very apparent that he cares about his patients and even gives his cell phone number to contact at any time with concerns. Thank you, Minot Dental Partners and especially Dr. Perkins, for such a pleasant experience!
