Your Deep Cleaning Solution

What Is Deep Teeth Cleaning?

Regular cleanings cannot reach bacteria hiding deep below the gumline in periodontal pockets. These bacteria destroy bone and cause tooth loss if left untreated. Deep cleaning removes infection from root surfaces, allowing gum tissue to heal and reattach.
Deep teeth cleaning, professionally called scaling and root planing, is a non-surgical treatment for gum disease. The procedure involves removing tartar and bacteria from tooth surfaces below the gumline and smoothing root surfaces. This eliminates bacterial toxins and creates clean surfaces that promote gum reattachment and healing.

Patients with gingivitis or mild to moderate periodontitis benefit from this conservative treatment approach. The procedure typically requires local anesthesia for comfort while thoroughly cleaning deep pockets. Minot Dental Partners in Minot, ND often completes treatment in two appointments, addressing half the mouth at each visit. Most patients avoid surgery when deep cleaning is performed early in disease progression.

Remove Infection Below Gums

Benefits of Deep Teeth Cleaning

Deep teeth cleaning (scaling and root planing) removes tartar and bacteria from below your gum line and smooths root surfaces to help gums reattach. It treats gum disease in its early to moderate stages, stops bleeding and swelling, and prevents bone loss. You can avoid gum surgery through this less invasive treatment when disease is caught early enough.

Stops Gum Disease Progression

Deep cleaning removes the infection causing your gum disease before it destroys more bone. You halt the disease process, preventing tooth loosening and loss that occurs when gum disease advances without treatment.

Eliminates Swollen, Bleeding Gums

Removing bacteria and tartar from deep pockets allows inflamed gums to heal. Within weeks, your gums stop bleeding during brushing, feel firmer, and return to a healthy pink color instead of red and puffy.

Avoids Need for Surgery

When caught early, gum disease responds well to deep cleaning alone. You skip the cost, recovery time, and discomfort of surgical gum procedures by treating the infection through this minimally invasive approach.

Improves Breath Quality

Deep cleaning removes bacteria hiding in pockets below the gum line where brushing can’t reach. You eliminate the source of persistent bad breath that comes from these infected areas, enjoying fresher breath throughout the day.

Helps Gums Reattach

Smoothing root surfaces after cleaning encourages gum tissue to tighten around teeth again. Your pocket depths shrink as gums heal, creating healthier attachments that are easier to keep clean with daily home care.

Covered by Most Insurance

Deep cleaning is a medically necessary treatment for gum disease, not a cosmetic procedure. Your dental insurance typically covers most or all of the cost, making treatment affordable and accessible when you need it.

Treating Gum Disease Below the Surface

Who Is Deep Teeth Cleaning For?

When plaque and tartar extend below the gum line, regular cleaning can’t reach the infected areas. Deep cleaning, also called scaling and root planing, removes buildup from tooth roots and smooths surfaces to help gums reattach and heal.

Diagnosed with Periodontal Disease

Your dentist found gum pockets deeper than three millimeters, indicating active infection that requires more intensive treatment than standard cleaning provides.

Tartar Below the Gum Line

Hardened deposits have formed on tooth roots beneath your gums, and these calcified areas harbor bacteria that cause inflammation, bleeding, and bone loss.

Gums Have Pulled Away from Teeth

Pockets have formed between your teeth and gums, creating spaces where bacteria accumulate and infection thrives, requiring deep cleaning to eliminate.

Do Any of These Situations Sound Familiar to You?

If you’re experiencing these symptoms, deep cleaning can stop gum disease progression and help your gums heal properly.

Scaling Root Planing Process

How We Perform Deep Cleaning Treatment

Deep teeth cleaning (scaling and root planing) removes infection-causing bacteria from below your gum line. We provide this essential treatment at Minot Dental Partners to halt the progression of gum disease and prevent tooth loss.
1

Anesthesia and Area Preparation

We numb the areas we’ll be treating so you remain comfortable throughout the procedure, which typically takes longer than a regular cleaning. Depending on the extent of your gum disease, we may treat your entire mouth in one visit or divide treatment into two to four appointments by quadrant. This careful planning ensures thorough treatment without overwhelming you or your healing capacity.
2

Scaling to Remove Tartar Deposits

We use ultrasonic scalers and hand instruments to remove hardened tartar deposits from the tooth surfaces below your gum line, where regular toothbrushes can’t reach. This process eliminates the bacterial colonies that have caused your gums to pull away from your teeth and form pockets. We work systematically to clean every affected surface, paying special attention to the deepest pockets where infection is most severe.
3

Root Planing to Smooth Surfaces

After removing the tartar, we smooth the root surfaces of your teeth to eliminate rough spots where bacteria tend to accumulate. This root planing process helps your gums reattach more firmly to your teeth as they heal. We may apply antimicrobial medication into the cleaned pockets to further reduce bacteria and promote healing during your recovery period.

Frequently Asked Questions

Deep Teeth Cleaning FAQs

Deep cleaning treats gum disease below the gum line. These questions explain what scaling and root planing involves, when it’s necessary, and how this treatment can save your teeth from periodontal disease at Minot Dental Partners.

What is deep teeth cleaning?

Deep cleaning, professionally called scaling and root planing, treats gum disease by thoroughly cleaning below the gum line where regular brushing and routine cleanings can’t reach. This procedure removes bacterial plaque, tartar, and toxins from tooth roots and inside gum pockets. Scaling eliminates deposits from root surfaces, while root planing smooths the roots to help gums reattach and prevent future bacterial colonization. Deep cleaning is therapeutic treatment for active periodontal disease, not routine maintenance for healthy gums. Dr. Perkins or Dr. Rustemier performs deep cleaning at Minot Dental Partners when gum disease has progressed beyond gingivitis, creating pockets deeper than three millimeters where bacteria thrive and cause bone loss.
You need deep cleaning if you have periodontal disease with gum pockets deeper than three to four millimeters, indicating infection and bone loss. Signs include bleeding gums, gum recession, persistent bad breath, loose teeth, or pus around teeth. However, periodontal disease can progress without obvious symptoms, which is why regular dental exams are crucial. During your checkup, Dr. Perkins measures pocket depths around each tooth using a special probe. Healthy gums have pockets one to three millimeters deep. Pockets four millimeters or deeper indicate disease requiring deep cleaning. X-rays reveal bone loss confirming disease severity. If deep cleaning is recommended, periodontal disease is present and threatens your teeth.
Regular cleaning, called prophylaxis, maintains healthy gums by removing plaque and tartar from tooth surfaces above the gum line. It’s preventive care for people without gum disease. Deep cleaning treats existing gum disease by going below the gum line into infected pockets, removing bacteria and tartar from root surfaces, and smoothing roots to prevent bacterial reattachment. Deep cleaning typically requires local anesthesia because we’re working in areas with active infection and inflammation. It’s usually performed in sections over two to four appointments rather than one visit. Deep cleaning is therapeutic treatment addressing disease, while regular cleaning prevents disease in healthy mouths. The distinction is important medically and affects insurance coverage.
Deep cleaning shouldn’t hurt because we numb the areas being treated with local anesthesia. You won’t feel pain during the procedure, though you’ll be aware of work being done and may feel pressure or vibration. Some patients experience anxiety about the anesthesia injection, but we can apply topical numbing gel first to minimize discomfort. After anesthesia wears off, you’ll likely experience some soreness and sensitivity for several days, particularly to temperature. Your gums may feel tender as healing begins. Over-the-counter pain relievers manage discomfort effectively. The temporary soreness is worthwhile considering deep cleaning stops disease progression and can save your teeth from eventual loss due to untreated periodontal disease.
Deep cleaning is typically performed over two to four appointments, treating one section of your mouth per visit. Each appointment lasts 45 to 90 minutes depending on disease severity and how much tartar has accumulated. Treating your entire mouth in sections allows adequate time for thorough cleaning and keeps appointments manageable. Some dentists complete deep cleaning in one lengthy appointment, but dividing treatment is usually more comfortable. Between appointments, you’ll maintain oral hygiene and take any prescribed antibiotics. The staged approach ensures each area receives careful attention. Once all sections are complete, you’ll transition to periodontal maintenance cleanings every three to four months to prevent disease recurrence at Minot Dental Partners.
After each deep cleaning appointment, expect some gum tenderness and sensitivity to temperature for several days. Your gums may bleed slightly when brushing during initial healing. This is normal and should improve within a week. Stick to soft, lukewarm foods initially if chewing is uncomfortable. Take over-the-counter pain relievers as needed. Continue gentle brushing and flossing; don’t avoid cleaned areas thinking you’ll irritate them. Clean gently but thoroughly to remove plaque. Rinse with warm salt water to promote healing. Some gums may recede slightly as inflammation resolves, making teeth appear longer. This is actually positive, indicating swelling has decreased. Most patients feel significantly better within two weeks once healing progresses.
Yes, deep cleaning can save teeth threatened by periodontal disease when performed early enough. It removes infection-causing bacteria, halting disease progression and allowing gums to heal and reattach to teeth. Combined with proper home care and regular maintenance cleanings, deep cleaning helps you keep your natural teeth. However, success depends on disease severity when treatment begins and your commitment to ongoing care. Severely advanced disease with extensive bone loss may mean some teeth can’t be saved despite treatment. The earlier periodontal disease is treated, the better the outcomes. Deep cleaning provides your best opportunity to avoid tooth loss from gum disease. Dr. Rustemier will honestly assess your prognosis during evaluation at Minot Dental Partners.
After deep cleaning, maintain excellent oral hygiene to prevent disease recurrence. Brush twice daily for two minutes using soft-bristled brush and proper technique. Floss once daily, gently cleaning below the gum line. Don’t avoid cleaned areas; they need cleaning to heal properly. Use antimicrobial mouthwash if Dr. Perkins or Dr. Rustemier recommends it. Stay hydrated to promote healing. Eat nutritious foods supporting your immune system. Don’t smoke or use tobacco, which severely impairs healing and promotes disease recurrence. Manage stress and health conditions like diabetes. Attend all scheduled periodontal maintenance appointments every three to four months. Your commitment to home care and maintenance visits determines long-term success.
Most dental insurance plans recognize deep cleaning as medically necessary treatment for periodontal disease and provide at least partial coverage. Typically, scaling and root planing receives 50 to 80 percent coverage, though this varies by plan. Some plans limit coverage to once per quadrant within specific timeframes. Documentation of gum disease through pocket measurements and X-rays is usually required for insurance approval. While insurance helps, you’ll likely have out-of-pocket expenses. Minot Dental Partners will verify your specific coverage before treatment and provide cost estimates. Even with limited insurance, deep cleaning is essential for saving your teeth. Untreated gum disease leads to tooth loss, and replacing teeth costs far more than treating disease.
Refusing deep cleaning when you have periodontal disease allows the infection to progress, destroying more bone and gum tissue supporting your teeth. Pockets deepen, teeth loosen, and eventually fall out or require extraction. You’ll experience worsening symptoms including painful abscesses, bleeding gums, and severe bad breath. Chronic infection spreads bacteria throughout your body via bloodstream, potentially affecting your heart, lungs, and other organs. Delaying treatment makes eventual intervention more extensive, expensive, and less predictable. Some damage becomes irreversible. You may need periodontal surgery or lose teeth that could have been saved with timely deep cleaning. Don’t postpone necessary treatment. Dr. Perkins or Dr. Rustemier wouldn’t recommend deep cleaning unless your teeth are at risk.

Dr.Sammy is amazing !! So kind and gentle – you can tell he truly cares and also loves what he does . He is very knowledgable , very good at explaining things . Very thorough .. weighs out pros and cons to help you make an informed decision . Does not push for unnecessary procedures . Looks at the whole picture first before jumping to decisions .. I wanted to switch to Minot dental partners from my prior dental provider because I’ve heard such great things about MDP and when I called to inquire about establishing care they were able to schedule me in the same week!! No months and months of waiting like other places. Dr. Sammy was so nice and so understanding about all of my concerns— great listener , very validating ! The staff are all so nice and you can tell they genuinely enjoy working there and working with eachother .. everyone makes sure your comfortable and feel welcome I also really really appreciate the fact they submit to your insurance first to determine what you may owe and then send you a bill at a later time as applicable rather than making you pay all upfront using an “estimated total” and submitting after you’ve paid Minot dental partners are amazing , I would 10/10 highly recommend .

I called morning with a massive cyst underlying two of my lower teeth. Originally I was provided a Tuesday appointment, but when I said that I was in severe pain and hadnt slept for a couple days, and asked if I could at least get a script for painkillers and or antibiotics, Sylvia asked me to hold on for a minute. A couple of minutes later she returned to say that one of the partners would come in to the practice to see me at 12:00. And the frank, no nonsense approach, some great surgery and clear options and post-op instructions just kept getting better and better! And you could tell that this was not a once-off event, the crew knew what they were expected to do, what their values are … This is not only good dentistry, but great patient-focus generated by even better leadership. Thank you. You have probably added at least five years to my life.

Sometimes I’d felt that the hygienist did not much and not worth the time and money. But not with Sarah. I’ll go back to her for sure.

We met Dr Perkins a few years ago when my husband chose implants over multiple root canals. Great general dentistry and superior cosmetic dentistry! Regardless of your dental health needs this is a fantastic dental clinic!

Dr. Perkins was very welcoming and professional. As someone with very bad anxiety, this was an unexpectedly pleasant experience and I will be recommending Dr. Perkins to everyone I know. It is very apparent that he cares about his patients and even gives his cell phone number to contact at any time with concerns. Thank you, Minot Dental Partners and especially Dr. Perkins, for such a pleasant experience!
